Exclamation Air Filter Question

How would you go about upgrading the air filter/ intake on an 1981 GSL.
I need more room under my hood so im looking for the smaller compact performance air filters
Also how can you tell if an air filter has gone bad ( stock 1981) the inside of mine looks good but some of the paper things are bent on the outside...

-Tom

Hey give me a break this is my first car thanks

Air filters, you have 2 options:
1) K&N or similar washable and reusable filter, you pay $50 once for the filter and $10 once for the cleaning kit. Its a good deal if you keep the car and dont lose the cleaning kit.
2) Generic paper filters, you pay $7 tops once or twice a year.

What do you need more space for under the hood?

i want to put a mirror so i can look at myself. No i just think the other/smaller air filters look sweet, instead of some gigantic blue thing.

going by what u said about this gigantic blue thing, i'm assuming ur running the stock carb. i have the small 6 5/8 chrome air cleaner that is sold at autozone and advanced auto. it came with an adaptor that will fit on the stock carb when i was using it. fits the holley i'm using now without that adaptor. i did however have to special order a k&n filter for it.

Sorry, kind of off topic, but does anybody know where I can get a filter for a Mikuni, or if K&N or Kool Blue makes one that will fit? I went to autozone and asked them, but this is about all I got:

Me: "Can I get a replacement for this filter?"
Autozone guy: "Lets see. Looks like it's washable"
Me: "Yeah, it is, but it's got a lot of crap in it that won't come out, plus it looks like it came out of a horses ***"
Autozone guy: "Well, you could wash it"
Me: "I just want a new one"
Autozone guy: "Hold on a sec. HEY BOB! C'MERE FOR A MINUTE!"
Bob: "What's up?"
Autozone guy: "What do you make of this?"
Bob: "Hmm. Looks like a washable filter. You should wash it"
Me: "Well, that thing is trash and I'd like to get something that isn't 12 years old and filled with ****"
Autozone guy: "If you wash it, it'll probably look better"
Bob: "Yeah, run it through some hot water and wash it"
Me: "Can you just look for a new filter for me?"
Autozone guy: "I'd say you should wash it"
Bob: "Yup. Wash it good."
Autozone guy: "The old washeroo"
Bob: "Washy-wash"
Me: =|

You get the idea.

Now that's pretty funny for a newbie,lol.
You can go to K&N's website and do a search by physical size or call them and give them the size and they will give you the part #. But when you order it don't go back to Autozone, sounds like they are in there own Outerzone, lol.

Welcome to the forum.
Also try www.spectreperformance.com for some other really neat air systems that you can create.

im not quite sure that you know what i mean you know the difference if you looked under the hood of a newer car like 02 and an 80's car. The small ones like go on the end of the intake pipe. I am just curious if that is an option of what would need to be done to aquire it.

I am just considering my options but thanks for the help

No one makes them specifically for our cars so in order to have one it would need to be custom fabricated... Thats where www.spectreperformance.com, that rx7doctor recommended comes in handy... IMO I don't think its worth it at all. If you really want a different look I would look into aftermarket intakes, these can be pricey but you will definately notice a large power gain.

For maximum space and a different look, put velocity stacks on the carb and get K&N stack hats. Just wash 'em regularly.
