Air Conditioner

I have some R12 and I have a recharge kit and after 24 years my AC is out. Can anyone direct me in the proper way to recharge this thing? I have to use the low pressure service fitting but which one it that? There are two... yikes.

I've learned from experience that it's best to have a shop do it that will pull a vacuum on the system, then charge it properly with the correct gauges, etc.

Really this is all I need to know. The fitting that goes to the firewall is that the low suction service valve? I am pretty sure it is, just don't want to cause myslef bodily damage.

Usually they are marked S and D for suction/discharge. If not it is pretty easy to figure out. The high pressure discharge will go to the condensor coils by the radiator. The low pressure suction will come off the line from the firewall/evaporator connection. Put the gauges/charge connection on when the system is off. Bleed off the air in your hoses. Then run the system full blast. Charge a gas into the low side (don't tip the bottle over). Charge till the saturation pressure/temperature on the low side is about 44 deg F (~42 psig). Keep an eye on the discharge pressure and definitely try not to go over 220 psig. These pressures are for R-12.

Good Luck. Scott
