Looking good! I like the idea of using the base of the stock air cleaner for an adapter. That never occurred to me. Nice work!

Looks like he is running an electric water pump to reduce parasitic drag...

Had something like that, the secondaries would sputter the carb

My guess would be that the secondaries were sputtering because they were gasping for air. Just a thought though. Not trying to knock anyone else's ideas. Just putting my train of thought out there to see what others think.

I thought about using a carb hat initially, but decided against it because it seemed like it would bottleneck the airflow at the last minute. All the carb hats I found were quite small, and the inlet neck on them was pretty small as well. Who cares how cold the air is if you are starving the engine. If you are turbo, the the smaller inlet size isn't really a big deal because the intake charge is pressurized, so you're still getting enough air. But if you are N/A, then you obviously want to minimize restrictions.

I think i might use this idea but instead of putting the filter right on top of the carb im gonna run a pipe and mount it somewhere in front of the radiator

Agreed

I have tried a 90mm PVC pipe with 90 degree bend, mounted straight on top of the carby air horn

The rest of the pipe ran to the vent below the windscreen so was quite short (via hole at top of firewall)

I noticed considerable flatness at higher RPM, so I'd say it was a restriction, plus there would have been flow losses through the bend as its on such a short radius - unfortunately that's all that will fit under the bonnet

another idea I have considered is using a 6"-4" aluminium pipe reducer for the plenum (like your turbo carb hats). then run your 2-3" or whatever pipe into that. the tapered plenum may be a better design.

Personally I want to see more pics/info on that Electric Water Pump setup!

Great idea using the base of the stock air box as an adapter.

I found it was running too hot with the thermostat so ripped it out and now have just the empty housing. Next time I will remove the bypass line and just have the hoses straight to and from the radiator.

Should be around 98mm, just under 4". I removed the cloth tape and it's fine, just needed to be a bit tighter on the hose clamp.

When I delete the emissions on cars I usually just blow $60 on the Racing Beat air cleaner, but I started wondering today if there is a cheaper alternative? I hate how the stock air cleaner has all those leftover nipples and connections that you don't need. Then you have to cap them all off, it's just not worth all the effort. In the end you are left with a rusty crap air cleaner that has vacuum caps all over it. Buying the Racing Beat air cleaner gives you a nice clean finished look. The only downside, of course, is that you are paying $60 for an air cleaner.

Before I throw down $60 on a Racing Beat air cleaner for the Nikki carb, do I have ANY other options? I looked around on Summit Racing at all the universal air cleaners, but didn't see anything with the right neck size. I believe the neck size on the Nikki carb is about 3.75". Anybody got any money saving tips for me on this?

Thanks,
Jamie

Here's what I did.
There's a snout I bolted to the radiator shroud that directs cold air towards the filter

I bought a triangle edelbrock air cleaner off summit. cost me like 20 bucks I think. Took a couple of hours to put on. My friend and I cut the snorkel off with a grinder and the size of the air cleaner fit perfectly inside the stock air cleaner with the top off. I noticed a difference as far as response goes too.

I saw one of these at the Advance one day shortly before I stripped my Nikki. It fit nicely on the stock base as trimmed in this thread. Cheap, easy and looking cheesey. But it's effective. And really transmits that intake roar.

Cool Induction noise enhancement

I am hearing the arguments that the stock air box isn't that restrictive (shouldn't be, it looks large enough for a 4 liter piston engine) and that most "high flow" intakes just mean you're sucking in hot air from the engine. I tend to agree.

The thing is, I took a short drive in my '85 GSL (CA car, all emissions equipment intact because CA will require Smog every 2 years for all of eternity) with the air filter out and the cover off- and the sound was GLORIOUS! I'm a big fan of induction noise over exhaust noise. I'd be willing to sacrifice a few HP to hot air in order to hear that sound. After all, I am in California and were talking about a car that will struggle to ever top 100hp to the wheels whatever I do to it legally. I obviously didn't buy my RX-7 to make it fast. I bought it to drive it like I stole it while staying under the speed limit (seriously, I've never had a car that makes you think you're going 20 mph FASTER than you are, it's wonderful). Can anyone chime in regarding improving induction noise?

I've even thought about building a "Ford Fiesta ST-Style" sound symposer (a tube from the air box to the firewall with a diaphragm so it doesn't suck in air but it transmits sound) since I cannot modify the stock air box much and preserve the emissions system. But I've also thought that all the little bits and doodads (like the airpump) that suck air from the stock airbox could have their own little air filter separate from the stock box, which I'd be willing to rig up if I know I can get better sound.

Has anyone else sought more noise as opposed to more power with their intake?

Do you want to sell the cover. It could help me.
