Unhappy Aftermarket Oil Cooler

Firstly I have searched and read everything. I know our cars run hot etc. But due to leaky cooler I'm thinking of using an aftermarket cooler. I really don't want to have to fab mounts etc, and I think the aftermarket kit will be easier, and I don't want to weld mine up as it has craked for the second time.

My questions are, what implications are there when using an aftermarket cooler since you will no longer have a thermal pellet like in the stock unit?

Will attaching the oil cooler to the front of the rad affect coolent temperature?

Should I buy the oil cooler with the fan or without?

Maybe I should buy with out and the remove my clutch fan and go electric?

Personally I don't think pressure is going to be a problem. I'm mainly concerned about cooling efficency and the lack of a thermal pellet.

I already spent $200 on factory oil cooler lines, she was good for a while, but I think since I had to fab up some mounts for the cooler as the factory mounts were shot, the cooler has now cracked near the mounting point to due extra stress of not having and rubber to isolite vibrations. The previous crack was on the fitting inlet (as with all of these coolers).

I don't want to spend the 800 at the dealer or 500US at mazda trix for the same shitty product. And used parts are almost impossible to find and will likely have the same problems.

My other option is to go with and FC cooler, either way I think I will need to be new cooler lines.

Does anyone have any personal experience with aftermarket coolers?

No personal experience with after market coolers. Most everyone knows my view on replacing the oil coolers. The FC is the better choice.

Well I think I'm going to buy the factory replacement and these stiffiners. Since I laready have brand new stock hoses, and it will be an easy install and aslo keep the car stock.

Is there any other place besides Mazdatrix and the dealer that sell the factory coolers?

I would like to ask some questions about coolers? I really want to go electric fans and my current gsl only has the heat exchanger cooler. (the finned thing the oil filter screws to.). can i keep the exchanger and run an after market cooler? or would that be goin backwards? I have an fb, and it sounds like i should use an fc style cooler? is that right? my friend has an 81 and his cooler goes under the radiator. he has had problems with cracks and leaks aswell.

I'd have to say adam i think your stress crack problem is caused by the lack of rubber isolaters. I dont know the specific application but is there away to add rubber mounts easily with out lots of fabbin?

I think so, I'm going to buy a new cooler and then add some cnc machined stiffiners, or get some welding done to strengthen the bosses.

As for your car, get rid of that heat exchanger, they are crap. Aftermarket coolers from what I have found out are not nearly as good as the stock units and don't have the Thermal Pellet.
