weird wiper issue
Curious if someone might know right off what this is:
On my 85 GS, the wipers stop at the upright position when turned off. When I installed them in the down position the motors would go the wrong way and run the wiper arms into the car, heh. Is this backwards motors or something else reversed? The switch itself seems fine as all speeds work normally, etc.
Wanting to fix this before I sell the car, as it looks a little weird driving around with the wipers in the upright position.
Thanks,
Mike

you might check the polarity of the wiring, as aussiesmg said. I'm not sure exactly how its setup on FBs but I assume that if the motor was going the wrong direction, than the wipers might act a bit funny.

Well it's more like it's stopping in the wrong position rather than going backwards. Right now, if they just stopped in the down position things would be fine. It's just when you put the arms on correctly the wipers go down instead of up.
anyone know if there's a relay or something that tells the wiper arm where to stop?
I'll check the wiring but honestly I wouldn't know what to look for, and I doubt someone would purposely reverse some wiring.. but you never know.

Mind do the same thing, kinda. Mine decided to stop at about the half way point. I just figured it was the cpu messing up and live with it. I figured out if you tap the selector switch forward real quick, you can get the wipers to sit at the lowered position, when not in use. They will always go back to the middle when in use though. Odd stuff...

I've been chewing on this question ever since you posted it. As far as the wiring, I don't believe there is any way to reverse the polarity. Mazda was nice in this aspect with all of the different connectors in the harness. It is nearly impossible to connect things wrong.
My other thought was maybe you had the wiper arms apart, (the ones under the cowl) and put them back together wrong, but I doubt you disassembled it.
You stated that when you first installed the blades, it wiped the hood instead of the windshield, thanks for the chuckle on that one. The picture in my mind was hilarious.
This leads me to believe that the problem exsisted prior to install, that the motor was parking in the wrong position earlier. Which, to me, indicates that what ever controls the park signal is the cause. However, I have no idea what that is.
Since the wipers are parking, and not simply stopping when the switch is turned off, I'm guessing the wiper unit is sending the signal when they are in the wrong position. The question then becomes, where does the signal originate? Find that and I think you will find your problem.
