Aftermarket Fuel pump debate.
Aftermarket Fuel pump debate.
Not asking to debate which is better, we do that enough already. Lets talk about noise. For a streetcar, most of us dont like some screaming, whirring pump. Post your experiences with aftermarket pumps.
Ill start, the Carter I endorse is freakin LOUD.

Bob,
I searched online for the Mallory Comp 70, to see if I could get some prices or more information. I found JEG'S to have it, and they say that it's a MARINE pump? what's with that?
Maximum rating of 6psi, 70gph, which seems like more than enough. What carb are you running?
Carl, is the Comp70 going to give me enough fuel for even the high end of that carb? 'Cause with a mounting bracket already attached to it, and Bob's mentioning that it's "really really quiet", it seems like a good choice
I notice there are also higher-end pumps in the Mallory line, but if I don't need them, then I'll stick with the Comp70.
Edit: as for the actual post topic... I don't have much to add other than the fact that the stock fuel pump is pretty quiet... hehe

I use a Redline Weber pump. It fits in the stock location with only minor modification. The stock cover / shroud is maintained. There is no noise when operating- you don't even know it's there.
Part # 99009-131. 6psi, 25gph http://www.redlineweber.com/SEMA2002...fuel_pumps.htm

I recently put in a stock replacement I got from NAPA for $75 in my 85 GSL. It is a bit smaller in diameter but fits nicely into the stock mounting platform if you take the metal mounting strap that they provide, shorten it a bit and wrap it around the pump before putting it into the stock mounting clamp. The stock hose connections connect up pretty much as they do with the stock pump.
One benefit of replacing the pump was the opportunity to clean up and paint the mounting platform, which was pretty badly rusted after 20 years of neglect, but still in good enough shape for restoration.
The NAPA pump works fine with my stock 12A and is very quiet, in fact I can't tell if it's running even listening outside the car.

Sounds like the Mallory will be fine. A bit pricey though aint it?
Ray, do you have a part number for this pump?
Also, can you guys/gals post any specs, p/n, links to any pumps you talk about?

actually, the carter is not as loud as the holley red's. Carter is made by allied so you can buy it at local parts house for less than the one with a carter tag.
and yes, the mallory is much quieter than carter.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but:
I have the Aeromotive 1000HP pump.
It is pretty loud, as it does have alot of flow/volume.
It's good for Fuel Injection/Carb/Turbo applications.
It might be overkill unless you are running some kind of forced induction or nitrous.
It used to be ridiculously loud, until I put my storage bins back in the car and made a metal shield around the pump to keep it from getting damaged on the road.
Now, it's livable, and can barely hear it over the exhaust.
Which is good, because if it "stopped" working, I would like to know asap.
My 02 cents.

Holley red is louder than the Carter?
Crit, I have used their universal pump, its quiet and ok for street/stock cars. It fits in the stock location with a little creative mounting and some elbow fittings.
Cody, Do you really need to give him his own account here?
Kinda funny though.

What intank pump are you talking about?... Do you have a GSL-SE or something?..
Oh my stock pump was a little loud, but now I bought a universal pump from the NAPA I work at, mounted it to the underbody itself near the wire that goes back up and it is quite loud, alot louder then the stock I had.

i have a walbro 255 on my race car. it has a ford 2.3 turbo running open downpipe, solid motor mounts, and no sound deading material, and i still hear the pump over all that. VERY loud.
right now i have the holley red on and it's not too loud. i can hear it.... till the car is cranked
then i hear nothing but exhaust. WOOOO! i'll soon know how the msd is and will let you all know.

I am running a carter 5-7 PSI. I really don't like it that much. I have problems keeping the pressure up even with a return built in to help keep the pump cool. But I think that the one I have may be over kill. I am switching to a holley blue this summer to see if it helps.

The most important thing I think as far as noise goes is where and how it's mounted. The Carter is usually mounted on the frame rail which is nice and solid plus it comes with those rubber bushings. I thought my Carter was pretty quiet and could barely even hear it over the exhaust. The Holley Blue I tried on the other hand was noisey as hell.
