Advice on buying 1st gen...

Alright, I'm a fairly avid car enthusiast, but new to rotaries, and wanting to learn. I recently found an 85 RX-7 (unsure of model) locally for $2500 with 86k miles, never wrecked, very clean body and damn near immaculate interior. I haven't had a chance to drive it yet, but I'm told it runs well (will be taking it for a drive tomorrow). Is there anything I should be looking for specifically?

In the long run, I hope to do a 13b-TII swap w/ mods, Mariah Mode One widebody kit, and full suspension/brakes (but who knows how far I'll actually get).

To be perfectly honest - I'm unsure about the whole deal. I know damn near nothing about rotaries, and have always wanted to - this seems like a fairly cheap way to get into one (or is $2500 too much?)

I'm clueless on a lot of this - help!

check the rear wheel wells and spare tire area for rust, as with all early 80's japanese cars. If the owner will remove the storage bins so you can inspect under there too, even better.

For $2500 USD it should be a GSL-SE

Is $2500 kind of high, even for a GSL-SE?

I agree that if it is a GSL-SE, Good price, especially with the miles. The "SE" is the most desirable of the first generation so if it is a "SE" , I would buy it. But, only if you have checked it through very well. drive it and see how it runs, check for oil leaks, some are bad leaks , others are very fixable. commone leaks are the oil filter area, the oil cooler (on se's) . If the car runs out welland looks to have been taken care of ( oil changes, good paint, decent tires, minor wear onthe interior etc..) then go for it. $2500.00 is not bad but I would offer less and see where it takes you...but it really depends of whether it is an "se" or not..if not an "se" all bets off. Best to look at it first, drive it, find out what it is, then come back to the forum.....

If you just want to swap motors you can save some money by buying a straight bodied non running car...
like mine! '85gsl no radiator $400 only 90 miles from you.
