Adding A-Pillar Gauge Pod, What Gauges Would You Put There?
Ok, I originally was going to add an A-Pillar gauge pod to have an air/fuel gauge, and I figured that I would just order the dual pod, and put something else in the spot, but I cant think of what...Any suggestions? I dont really want to duplicate what I have stock on the dashboard, unless you feel that one gauge may be severly inaccurate...If nothing comes to mind, Ill just get the single spot one, but I think it might look goofy...

I had the single pod on the A-Pillar and it looked just as good as the dual pod... What i put on there was the Oil and Fuel Pressure (upgraded to dual pod). I already had the A/f where the clock used to be. Reason for Oil Pressure was that my stock gauge didn't seem to move very quick and usually showed close to zero, and fuel was to see how well my pump was working.
I have a pic of the single pod on my web site if you really wanna see... Its not the greatest pic but you get the idea.My Pics

79+80_rx-7, are those gauges pointed upward or is it just my imagination?
Also, What other places have you guys put gauges on pre 84 models? I was going to order a few gauges yesterday and went out to my car to take a look where they shoud go and I came up with nothing. It would be cake if I had the 84-85 model but the pre 84's dashes kind of make it hard to place gauges. I was thinking I would put a 2 5/8" boost gauge right in the drivers side vent (looks like it will fit perfect) but even there the steering wheel kind of blocks the view (don't want that when I'm bosting 15psi and sideways in 3rd gear , need to be able to see it easily). Any sugestions/pictures would be awsome.
Thanks

A lot of boosted 7's in Oz have there boost gauges in the drivers side vent. I hope when your pushing 15psi and sideways you'll be watching the road, not the boost gauge.
I've got my boost gauge in an Autometer mounting cup attached to the a-pillar and will be putting a couple more gauges in the center console below the air controls and above the ashtray. I think this is where the original radio was.
Once I get done I'll take some pics, but it could be a while. Oh, the gauges going in the center console will be Volts ('cause i've already got it) and water temp. I'll probably add an oil pressure gauge later too, because I'm not convinced the stock ones are as accurate, and I don't know what '4' means on the gauge.

I was just saying it would be a little nicer if I could see the gauge in my view while driving on the road. heh, of course I woulden't be looking at the gauge if I was sideways in 3rd, I think I'd be focused on other things
Was the a-pillar cup designed for the 1st gen or does it just fit well? The pictures above kind of look like the gauges are pointing at the celing.
Where did you have your stereo? Or did you just take it out?
I'm guessing that 4 means 4 bar or 58psi, but I know what you mean, I'd rather have a gauges that are more "real time" vs what the pressure was a few seconds ago.
thanks

The cup is the standard Autometer 2and1/16 inch chrome mounting cup. It attaches quite well to the plastic of the pillar, but does require you to drill through the plastic. It looks good and can be angled however you want.
I actually thought of putting my boost gauge in the vent as well, but decided that it was obstructed a bit too much while driving as you've said. That's why I went with the cup. It's nice and shiny.
This pic shows the location of the stereo and the hole where I'll be putting my gauges. Note that the boost gauge is not in the cup in this pic and has now been moved slightly.
I hope that helps. Oh, please ignore all the cracks - I'll get the dash reskinned one day.
4 = 4 bar. You know, I never thought of that. It's bloody obvious though... Oh well.

Steve,
My brother had a heater hose split dumping all his coolant while driving. He noticed after a several seconds and pulled into a servo to inspect the damage. The garage there cut and reattached the hose so he could get home. However before he left they suggested that he might a have a warped head due to the car overheating.
He just left and then burst into uncontrollable laughter.
The engine died though.

After thinking it over a little I think I might not want a a-pillar mount. The a-pillar is already pretty far inward and with a couple gauges hanging out there it will obstruct the view even more. Comments? Maybe I sholuld try to do something like what s2-13bt is going to do under the HVAC controls. hmm... decisions decisions...

That space above the ashtray is perfectly suited to installing 2 x 2 1/16" Autometer gauges comfortably. I'm going to make up a baffle from thin alluminium to house them and attach it to the console using chunky hex headed bolts. It should look pretty cool.
I still have to buy the water temp gauge that's going in there so it likely won't happen for a few weeks yet. When I finish I'll post some pics though.
I agree, that's why I got it. I always wanted one since I first saw it, and despite the cost, got one as soon as I got the car.
See ya's
