Adding electric fan, what to take off?

I will be adding an Black Magic 150 fan to my 85 Rex. What do I take off to make it fit? What is invloved in taking off the factory fan, and what parts with it? Do you have to take out the radiator to put the fan in?

Thanks

John

No, you dont need to remove the radiator. Do an Internet search. Theres a couple of good web pages detailing the installation of this fan on a 1st gen.

I did this about 2 months ago on my GSL-SE, I should have documented and taken pictures but nobody seem intrested.

BTW great fan choice, I feel spend the money and buy the best fan, instead of a used junk yard unit.

HOW OLD IS YOUR RADIATOR? Good time to clean the fins at least with water- reverse flow.

Discard: clutch fan, aluminum spacer, plastic fan shroud.

Need: Electric fan, mounting bracket (see below) 4 shorter bolts to hold water pump pulley to shaft. 12 gauge wire for power-ground. Misc electrical terminal ends.

My kit came with all-thread bolts and wiring harness and circuit breaker.

Mounting: I bought 2" aluminum angle and cut 1" off the side that mounts to the radiator, and then trimmed down (for looks the edges) so the bracket would not look so box like.

I really believe you should remove your radiator, because I mounted my fan to the radiator. I fasten the aluminum angle to where the plastic shroud was mounted to (4 bolts). Make sure you postion the fan more to drivers side as posible to provide clearance for the lower radiator hose and heater hose.

Also pay close attention to where the t-stat bulb for the fan rest onto your radiator, making sure it does not rest on the tube but on the fins.

I will try to shoot a picture of it today and post my final installation.

John

Yea good choice of fans. I did mine last year. To mount it i got some flat aluminum stock and bent little brackets that hold the fan to the holes used for the stock fan shroud. Granted this is on the shorter 82 radiator, but you should be able to make something similar. If I can I'll snap a pic of it later today. As rhinor61 said you'll need to remove the clutch fans mounting bracket and use shorter bolts to hold the pully to the water pump. This is not an issue for 83 and earlier cars as the fan setup is different, all you have to do on those cars is grind a thread or two off the existing bolts. Hope that helps

Here's a link for the Black Magic replacement someone did a few years ago.

brian - IIRC, a early 80s model Taurus has been mentioned frequently as a candidate. I'm sure some searching here on 'electric fan' would tell more.

Your reading assigment. Looks like Tempo, Fiero and Accord fans are popular too. Should be easy to find as well in a yard, esp the Tempo and Accord.
