Added a GSL-SE to my Rx collection, also need help

picked up a '85 GSL-SE today from the junkers, car was complete down to pretty much every last part that comes from the factory (i did remove all the carpet/bins behind the seats temporarily tho)

its been sitting for 3 years, but was in a car-port somewhere in alberta before it made its way out here. damn thing was covered in green sludge, pine needles EVERYWHERE, strange crustations all over the body that appear to be from trees/mold.

anyways, i originally bought this as a parts car for my 84 "GS-SE" project, but after spending multiple hours cleaning the exterior and swapping what extra parts i had into the engine, this may just make my GS the parts car. this thing has ZERO rust in comparison, less KM and is in much better shape.

i am having one strange problem with it which i cant figure out. i drove it today for a bit, then when i pulled back in my driveway it stalled and i havent been able to get it going again, it will start up normally and sounds healthy (rev's to about 2000rpm) then just dumps back down to 0rpm and stalls when im cranking the ignition (it is actually firing). i checked for vacuum leaks, put in fresher plugs/wires, tried jumpering the terminal plug by the AFM to keep the fuel pump on, but still no luck. it sure sounds like it was to keep running but it just stalls out. not a freakin' clue why.. perhaps TPS?

anyways..... here's some before/after pics of todays work. any help would be greatly appreciated regarding the stalling!

that same problem happen to me a while ago......
Check the igniters(plugs/connectors) make sure the terminals are tight

First seeings it has been setting, dont drive it until you replace the fuel filter on her. Go put some 93 octane gas in it to try to burn the old gas out, also add 4oz of marval mystry oil to help luburcate the fuel system along with settling any junk it may have in the tank. The MMO will also help clear some carbon build up. No to help you with the problem of it running then stalling. The car is flooding itself. First things first pull all four spark plugs out and disconnect the ignitors (this is a safty precaution) and turn the car over for about 30 seconds and watch all the white color smoke come out from the plug holes (this is gas) once the smoke disapates put the plugs back in, before putting the plugs in clean then with some carb cleaner (i've found the best is Autozone carb cleaner) Once you have done this put it all back together and try it again. If the car runs fine untill you turn it off you will need to do one of two things. 1) get the injectors cleaned (They are leaking) 2) Install a small 20amp toggle switch in the fuel pump wire. You will turn this off before shuting the car off and turn it back on while cranking the car. This is something I had to do, due to the fact I had installed a stronger pump that was flooding the car. If all this does not help put each plug wire one at a time and place a screw driver in it and lay it up against the strut tower, then turn the car over a few times and check for a nice strong spark (blue). Do this on each wire to make sure the ignitors are firing and your getting proper spark. The TPS is very easy to adjust there is a write up which is here http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/gslseidle.html writin by a good friend of mine David Lane. Duh... after writing all that it doned on me that the timing could be off. Set the timing back to TDC and you should be good to go. Let us know the updates and congradz on the nice find. Treat it well, you now own a peice of history.

checked. they all seem tight, however the ignitors dont look in the best of shape...

im going to re-do a bunch of the grounds and see if that helps any *shrug*

i yanked the fuel pump lines and emptied the 3/4 tank of old gas that was in there before i ran it.... pain in the *** to do, too! tried syphoning first but just ended up with a mouth full of old gas (not tasty) but ya i do have a newer filter to put in, was planing on doing that tommorow. as for spark, it definetaly has spark.. i was talking to GSL-Addict about the TPS, he gave me some helpful info on how to get that done, thanks for the link too.

hopefully i can have it running normally in the next few days... then its on to doing the brakes, damn things are draggin' whenever the car moves

Just to let you know for future knowledge, the SE has a drain plug on the bottom of the gas tank (looks like a bolt). It will save you from having to go through that mess if you ever need to drain the tank again.

haha, doh! o'well i didnt suffer too bad. after attempting to syphon the gas for a few minutes i gave up and just yanked the line off the fuel pump then let it empty out into buckets.

ok, well finally it runs. changed over the fuel filter and put in a bit more fresh gas. then adjusted the throttle speed sensor and TPS.

few strange issues still, the most noticable is when i drove it and layed into the throttle a bit the power seemed very intermitted and i was hearing grinding noises coming from the rear of the car. i do know the brakes are draggin' on the rotors so its kind of hard to define exactly where sounds are coming from. would a screwed up LSD cause this intermitted power? or could this be engine related.. it didnt feel like it was getting very much power to the ground for a 13b.

also the idle is way low, even with the throttle speed adjusted almost all the way out, once its warm the idle is sometimes down around 200-300rpm. im checking for vacuum leaks, but from what i understand vacuum leaks on these cars cause a higher idle?

the TPS could also be at fault, i used a multimeter to check it instead of a tester light and i was getting very variable readouts. i did get it to the point where a solenoid started clicking, so i figured that would be good enough for now (just to get it running)

anyways i'm glad i have it running finally! now time to tackle the rest of the car! haha

i think i have the tps adjusted properly now. altho that damn solenoid pretty much stays clicking the entire time the car is in ACC or running, and the idle is back to sticking around 800rpm. sweet!

its still kinda whacky on startups, sometimes it starts up right away and others it fights, doesnt really seem to matter if its hot/cold.. usually after messing with the timing a bit it will fire up again but it seems like i have to constantely change the timing.. wtf?

i think i got a lot done tonight so i'll see tommorow how it runs, this may not be an issue at all now.

Timing should not be changing by itself (unless you left the dizzy loose). More likely your spark conditions are changing. If you have not done so already then hit all the usual suspects (cap, rotor, plug/coil wires). These cars are also notorious for grounding issues, which could possibly affect your spark, so you might want to pull both ends of both battery cables and give them a good cleaning.

These are items that you are going to want to do anyway, so even if its not the cause of the original issue you'll still be better off for it. Good luck with it, I hope you get her figured out and screaming like a good girl should..
