acv - too many hyrdocarbons - failed emissions !!! help

i went to get my car inspected the other day and i failed emissions testing, blowing out too many hydro carbrons... i looked around the forum and people say its the acv and stuff like that

what else should i do?

where is the ACV, where can i buy a new one/rebuild/fix it????

Yeah, The AVC is a large component of the exhaust system. From what I understand, it routes fresh air to the cats to produce cleaner fumes. (non technical babble)... When mine was bad, I could smell gas from the back, I happened to borrow one from a buddy of mine to pass smog tests here.... and the fumes were clean as warm air.

ohh yeahh... the ACV is pretty damn expensive, try borrowing one form someone.. b/c it's about $300 from mazdatrix new!!

I took the ACV off my GSL-SE. I can check if I still have it lying around. Dunno if it is in any better shape than yours as we don't have to pass emissions tests in MI.

but what exactly is an ACV? is it a pump? a hose? a screw? a filter?

Air Control Valve. It either takes air from or puts extra air into the exhaust.

Here are two pictures I just took of mine. It looks like this and goes where the gold plate is here. Comes off with a 10mm wrench, but helpes to remove the air intake tube temporarily.

So if you smell gas from your exhuast, even when cold, it is because the ACV is bad?????
