Damn man, that sucks. Im glad you're okay though. The only thing i can think of is that the cable could be frayed, and stuck somewhere along the line, i would just track it down....

Well, it could be that something is binding on the linkage itself. The cotter pin on my choke connecting arm broke and the arm fell, jamming the accelerator linkage wide open. Luckily I was stopped at a light and was able to free it up by pumping on the pedal.

How did you get it unstuck? Just curious.
Yeah, the carper or floor mat could catch the pedal, but you should be able to reproduce that situation in you driveway. If it was something with the cable or the carb, it should stil be obviously not returning properly, so the carpet/floor mat would bemjy guess. This may be why most new vehicle have floor mat clips to keep them from sliding up under the pedals.
On a related situation, I HATE FLOOR PARKING BRAKE PEDALS. I can't even count how many times I have gone to change gears in trucks and vans, only to have my shoe-lace loop the parking brake pedal and we sitting at redline with no gear change.

You might wanna double check that... Did the pedal actually come up but the engine kept revving?

On my car, I had a problem with the seccondaries, where they'd stick open...

Seccondaires kick in at about 4500 RPM, UNDER LOAD (They are vacuum actuated and will not open in your driveway.)

Anywhozer, if I floored it to pass someone or climb a hill or something like that and it got past 4500 RPM, as soon as I let off the gas the engine would continue to accelerate. It was scary the first time...

Actually, the first few times I didn't realize it. I would be pulling out of a parking lot or side road and I was always taught to shift low (I have since corrected this habit. I now shift at peak power in everything I drive. ) so I'd shift at the blisteringly fast engine blowing speed of 4500 RPM... I'd hear that buzzer and think it was someone honking at me. (Cause I didn't know about it... I had just gotten the car.) Anywhozer... So many innocent people got flipped off... *sigh* Good times... Good times...

Anywhozer.. Yeah, get it fixed, Try it on an open road or something to verify... GOod luck man and stay safe.

I had the butterflys stick open on an old car of mine and I could hardly stop, I kept going faster and faster, my brakes felt like butter. I had to kill the engine and use the e brake. the barrels were warped a little so I bought a new carb for the car. BTW It was a 84 charger not a 7.

i played with it today and couldnt get it to happen again. Everything looks ok, so i think it prolly was the carpet. im not sure tho, i just gotta take it easy. scared the hell out of me. Someguy took my lisence plate too, and when i pulled over after it unstuck yelled at me. However i couldnt hear him well cause my exhaust is loud. all i made out was "who taught you how to drive" and he held up a peice of paper. police havent contacted me yet tho.

Screw him... He's a jackass and I doubt the police will get in touch with you based on his testimony...

Anywhozer, Try it on an open road... Just nail it and shift at high RPM... Accelerate your *** off. See if it might be the 2ndaries... Just in case...

Dont feel bad. Im running a 13-B sp with ida. I was at LACR last wednesday night. I was down at the track, at appx 100 miles/hr, on 3rd gear when my the carb return spring snapped and my pedal got stuck on the floor @ over 10K rpm. had to shut it off and the car still ran a 15 sec flat.

Lesson learned. now i have a return spring on each side for safety.

So you're saying you have an automatic...

If not, you could have just pushed down um.. the clutch.

Well true, but you could turn the engine off if necessary. And since fb's have no power steering, the handling would be acceptable.

<----You're right, that split second moment, if the pedal was all the way down, could prove fatal. I'd probably just turn the engine off though. I'd rather blow my engine than die.

Oh, by the way, no offense meant when I said that... just a thought. I am constantly sarcastic so don't mind me.

its standard, but i paniced under the pressure, in hindsight, the engine was going to blow anyway...should have let it blow...then again if i didnt speed up i would have bought it too, it was a pass or die kinda situation...braking would have got me killed too.

I had something similar to that happen in my Probe GT when I had it....

I had just finished cleaning the intake and TB out with cleaner, and i was taking it out for a ride to go somewhere. I was accelerating up a hill and I got to the top and pushed the clutch in to shift, and it the damn thing bounced off the 8000rpm rev limiter about a half a dozen times, until I turned off the key and coasted down the other side of the hill. restarted the Car and it never did it again.
