Accelerator pump?

Car will only start if I pump the pedal about 10 times before turning the key. Accelerator pump? Runs once started…

Does it stumble when you floor it quickly? If so, it's most likely the accelerator pump.

No….that’s the odd thing…when the engine revs does the increased vacuum help the pump?

No, the pump is electric. Check to see if your choke is engaging.

I am talking the accelerator pump on the carb, which is not electric. Thanks though!

Ok, the second post I thought you were referring to the fuel pump. The accelerator pump is a plunger like a syringe, as I'm sure you know. I'm old and easily confused PeeJay, now get off my lawn before I whack you with my cane.

Sounds like there isn't enough vacuum during starting to begin the siphoning process during idle. The accelerator pump is providing enough fuel to overcome the lack of vacuum (thus lack of fuel on start) then once the engine gets into idle there is enough vacuum present at the idle venturi to overcome the vacuum leak. Or it could be choke related. I have a weber IDA thus I don't have a choke. I've never encountered a starting experience with a choke but I think I understand the principals of how it works.

Your carbs gunked up and needs to be taken apart and cleaned up or you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
