Does it still have R-12 in it or did someone convert it?
If you have r-12, you really should get it evacuated by someone who can recover it. Best for the enviroment. They shouldn't charge you, as they can reuse that crap I belive. I know I wasn't charged when I took my honda in when I converted it.
You COULD just evacuate it into the air, but that isn't great for mother nature.

This is VERY true. Wait till June/July to pull it and decide it the weight loss is REALLY worth it.
On that note, I need to find a shop here in town to add some freon to my system. Have a few cans I found in a garage. Those things are like gold and I dont' want to waste it by doing it myself.

there are schraider vavles (same as car tire vavle stem) & you push them down to evacuate it... if you dont want the hassle of taking it somewere & your not a nature nut... but reusing it does sound like a good bet, if its r-12.. as for weight, the compressor weighs about 20 pounds, about 5 in all the lines, 10 in the evaporator box, and about 5 for the condenser. o and i'd guess 5-10 for the steel compressor mounting bracket. those are all estimates, so it adds up to about 50. not too much, a little bit. does make the engine bay look alot better. but not worth it if you hate being hot, lol. have fun
