The absolute worse varnished tank ever, help!!!!
This sucks, in my other forum i told yall how my 85 gsl-se would start again, turn out to be plugged fuel filter. I just got done pulling the tank and the varnish is so bad the fuel pickup was dripping it. Looked like really thick oil!!! I've already let it soak in a gallon of lacquer thinner for 3 days. flushed and then put a can of barrymans and a gallon of gas, but it only get out the loose particles. I can see patches of bar metal in the bottom but the varnish is thick. Fixin to go to wally world to get another gallon of lacquer thinner and a bag of marbles, boss told me when you shake em around in the tank it helps to loosen the junk. Also has that white powdery condesation stuff on the top inside, how to i get that crap out? Thanks!

the best thing to do is have someone clean and seal it PROFESSIONALLY. it'll be clean as a whistle when it's done, and they can pressurize the tank to make sure there are no leaks. trust me it sucks to replace the tank and come to find it leaks, then wasting a full tank of gas by draining it or trying to manhandle 80lbs sloshing back and forth. whooo

Ditto.
A pressure washer will get the left half clean, but there are top to bottom baffles inside the tank that would prevent you from getting everything.A good, professional dip and wash will get it PERFECTLY clean.
Considering the rarity of GSL-SE fuel tanks in the world, itd be worth the cost.

I'll check on prices of getting it done proffesonaly (damn i cant spell worth a ****) But seeing that I'm a po *** college student I'll probably have to do it my self. Basically I've got it soaked enough that i can stick a rag in the pickup hole and wipe it clean (pretty shiney!), so its not baked-on like, just really oily. What about taking it down to the car wash and using the engine degreaser setting to soak it then blast the hell out of it with the rinse cycle? Surely with it being flushed twice with a gallon of lacquer thinner it doesnt have much fight left in it right?! Damn Varnish

Awesome. Emery Radiators in Abilene TX. Said they'd clean it for $50-$75 or Clean and Seal it for $100!!! I think its a hell of a deal so I'm Jumping on it. That and the damn fuel filters are $20 a piece and their starting to add up.

Yeah, but then you're starting out clean and know exactly what you've got. With any future problems that you think may be fuel related, you can rule out the entire fuel system. That's a good start.

I deffinitaly recomend emery radiators to anyone in the Big country area. I brought the tank to him today (saturday) and he's gonna have it done by sunday 1:00 for $45. I spent that much in lacquer thinner!! Very cool dude.
