85 wiper assembly arm "grommet"

I have a 1985 RX-7, 12A engine, 220k miles.

The metal arm which connects the wiper motor to the driver's side of the wiper assembly/rack/transmission came off.

I was able to pop it back on, but now it is so loose that it makes a loud noise whenever I use it. I am also sure it will pop off again. This plastic grommet is similar to what I have seen in older Chryslers.

I have been told that I must buy the whole wiper assembly and that the "grommet" is not available as a separate part - this can't be right. There must be a part out there I can use.

Does anyone know if there are after-market "grommets" that I can buy. If not, will a grommet from someother Mazda/car work?

If all else fails, where can I get a cheap wiper assembly - I have called the dealer and Mazdatrix and they no longer offer them.

Go to page 115 of 132. It has the parts for the wiper assembly shown. Once you find the part, the Mazda part numbers are listed on the right side of the page. Then call up Mazda and give that number. They should have it or a least be able to get it within a few days.

The wiper stuff is NLA.

Time to go used-parts hunting.

FWIW the normal failure mode of those plastic doodads (they are also on the headlight rods) seems to be they split in half where it clips together. If that happens, you can clean it up *really* well, assemble the plastic parts to the metal link, and JB Kwik it to hold it together. That's how my wiper links are, and I'll have to do it to the headlight rods pretty soon.

Are you talking about the plastic ball-and-socket joint? Those things are a really poor design. I could not find it as a separate item in the diagram, but what is #992900300?. Used parts are not an option in many areas the yards do not have any RX-7s.

It is just a piece of hardware so an aftermarket one should work if it can be found. It is a matter of finding the supplier.

They do not sell the ball and socket joints ("grommet"). They list the entire "link-wiper" for $139.95. If someone can suggest a hardware distributor, there is probably a similar part made.
