85 shutter valve question
i searched and didnt find what im looking for so i thought i might ask. i just picked up an 85 GS with 94k miles on it and never been driven hard ( old lady owned it ). when i first got it i drove it home from tracy (about an hours drive ) and i noticed it had a massive vac leak ( brapping sound in lower end of throttle/rpm range, sluggish accelleration and couldnt get it to go above 60 mph ).
got it home and picked up a rebuild kit thinking that i may have to do the carb, and even if i didnt i would have a spare carb kit laying around ( they are getting kinda hard to find ). pulled the carb and noticed the shutter valve had been modified and was no longer connected to the actual shutter on the intake. also realized the master vac sylenoid ( big black one almost looks like an egr ) wasnt connected. so i bought a new shutter valve, about 12 feet of small vac line, and 2 cans of carb cleaner and got to work.
i put the new shutter valve on and replaced all of the emissions lines ( my sponsor gave me a vac readout for the emissions ) and i cleaned the holy hell out of the carb. reconnected the secondary linkage and put the carb on making sure to replace any vac lines that even remotely looked tired. went to fire it up and it still had the vac leak but it was making a really loud hissing noise and wouldnt idle ( it had idled a little high before and the idle tended to bounce ) so i had a friend hold down the gas after i started it and i opened up the air filter.
i covered the large hole that leads to the shutter valve and the car seemed to run a little smoother but i noticed that a small hole just above the altitude compensator was pulling large amounts of air, so i covered that and noticed it running better.
my theory is that i may have put the shutter too far forward when connecting the shutter valve so i kinda needed to know how far forward to put it. should i be looking at the smooth side of the shutter or the side with the rivets? also im pretty sure im not supposed to be fulling that much air through those pasages to can anyone tell me what the other cause may be? maybe a bad altitude compensator?
