85 SE Shifter vibration / noise

I have some sort of gear sounding noise resonating through my shifter while under acceleration. It does it mostly in 1, 2, but I think its slightly apparant in 3-5 as well. Tranny has been rebuilt with all new bearings, clutch, pressure plate etc. I've change the two motor mounts and replaced the trans mount. In neutral, motor revs smooth to 7k with no vibration. This may be a seperate issue, but I also hear a metallic ping sometimes when I press clutch pedal.

Let me add it's an 85 GSL-SE.

ok, make sure the shift **** is tight and the locking nut underneath the **** is snug. it may sound weird but a loose **** can cause that exact issue. i've had it happen. sometimes the **** doesn't even feel all that loose, but the locking nut underneath the shift **** sometimes backs off just enough to cause that.

I wish it were that easy.

Listen carefully to this video I found on you tube. You can hear the noise I speak of when he really gets into it. Kinda sounds like a locust screaming after being caught by a bird. Really apparent at 16 - 19 seconds in vid.

Although this may be a separate issue, let me add that I am unable to downshift into 2nd gear while slowing down without grinding the gear until I drop below about 30mph.

That almost sounds like a clutch issue. Along with the "ping" upon pressing the clutch, I would definitely be looking at the release mechanism to be sure that there is nothing in it's way and that the clutch is fully disengaging.

If you don't see anything it might be time to pull the transmission and inspect the clutch. Bent fingers, broken spring?

May sound absolutely redundant to someone who has done a bunch of work to their car, but just be sure too that there are no loose heat shields as well.

I have a similar noise. If I grab/hold the bottom of the shifter, through the rubber, really tight it stops. It is a weird noise & not sure how to fix. maybe swap shifter?

That sounds like bushings maybe in your case.
