I have an 85 RX-7 that has been sitting for some time.
Just before I put it away, I had problems with the oil sensor.
The engine is getting oil pressure and the needle moves alittle when it is first started. The motor runs fine.

I had this problem on my 90 ZR-1 and it was just an $16 oil sensor.
Does the RX-7 have a sensor or a oil sending unit? How can I Fix this?
I don't like driving around without knowing oil pressure.

When you said it moves alittle, does that mean it shows low pressure all the time? And yes it has a oil pressure sensor located just below where the oil filter is on the side of the block, check your connection also. rx7doctor

 

It moves a smidge when you first start it and then it rests at bottom.
Like I said the motor is fine and runs strong. Do I just buy a new sensor?

i had a problem that at ACC. the guage would go up and read 50psi (without enigne even turned over yet) and then i ended up getting a new autometer guage that included the sender hooked up it and the reads about 45 at idle (kinda high) and then my stock guage still reads 110 when at idle so i think my stock guage jsut went out..but if its reading nothing then that sounds like a wiring problem

 

For what it is worth, I have an 84 GSL that I bought last year that had a blown engine and had been sitting for a year or two. When I installed another engine and got it running, it never read any oil pressure. This was an engine that was pulled from my other car that was totalled so I knew there was oil pressure. I also used the wiring harness from the totalled car. Even so, I still double checked the sending unit by measuring the resistiance from the point that the connector hooks up to and ground. As there is an increase in pressure, I got a drop in resistiance. Now I am left with swapping the dash cluster with the known working oil meter.

 

So you think I need to find a used / new dash cluster or install another gauge?

Try replacing the sending unit first. That fixed my problem. I bought mine from Victoria British.

In my case yes. You need to make sure your sending unit is functioning. I checked mine with a muti-meter set on resistiance. Without the car running and measuring from the tip of the sending unit (where the connector hooks to) and ground it should read very high resistiance. With the car idling, you should read in the ballpark of 200 ohms. With an increase in engine speed it should drop to about 150 ohms. The problems I have had with the sending unit is it leaking oil. In that case forget if it functions, get a new one anyway. Autozone $35.99.
