85 outer tie rod end removal
Does anyone know how to get nut at the end of the tie rod end off? I just wasn't sure if it was threaded the opposite direction or it just might be really on there. Thanks.
Those can be a pain in the *** to remove. Once you remove the nut which is just regular thread (there's also a lock pin ontop of it make sure that's removed first). Couple of ways to go on about doing thing.
1) go rent out for free an actualy tie rod remover. It basically looks like a fork, thats tin at the front and thick at the back and you're suppose to try to wedge it in there. Personally on my rx-7 never was able to get them off like that.
2) Grad a thick piece of wood, you don't want to bang metal to metal to screw up the thread unless its being replaced.Tap it fron all the sides first because thats where they get stuck at really. Then from there bang it out from the top.
They can get pretty tedious.

Actually im not at that step yet. I may be doing this completly wrong. I got the lock nut off with the pin in it. That was easy. I have not though knocked out the actual tie rod end yet. I was now trying to undo the nut at the end of the tie rod end that actually attaches to the rod. Is that wrong order? Sorry very new to this. If it is the wrong order what does one do once the tie rod end is knocked out? How do you get it off of the rod? Thanks!
How did you get the nut up before taking out the pin in the first place? Also y ou said the nut doesn't want to come off at top? Is there any way of posting a picture real quickly so i see what you've done?
If you look at this image, the pin that is ontop of the crown nut comes out first, then you take the nut out, then the actualy tie rod end come out the bottom with a little effort.
Sorry just reread your last post. Those usually come off better with a bit of heat. But basically you have 2 nuts in there that are jamed into each other. You need 2 wrenches to get them off. Or just use a wrench and a vise grip on the tie rod end.
are you talking about the nut on the adjustment shaft? if so you really want to try and keep those where they are. they serve as a guideline when putting new tie rod ends on. if its the nut at the actual end on the control arm then you may have to use a breaker bar. also liquid wrench helps and i fyou leave the nut on but just barely above the threads you can use a small sledge to pound it out without damaging the threads. you may have to remove the adjustment rod from the inner tierod and use a rag and a vice to get the outer to come off of the adjustment rod as well. somethimes liquid wrench or mmo helps this process, other times you may have to heat it with a torch.

Yes the outer tie rod is left hand threaded. So the jam nut you are speaking of of left hand threaded. You will need to turn it opposite than normal to loosen it from the end of the tie rod.
You will then need a pickle fork to properly remove the tir rod from the steering knuckle.

Thank you for all the help guys. First the knowing it was a reverse thread saved me a HUGE headache. Secondly I found out today a little propane goes a long way! With just a minute or two of heat I could get those adjustment nuts loose. And we did find with a lot of hate and hammering and the fork tool you can get the tierod loose. Thanks again.
