85 lightweight flywheel in 82, what counterweight

Im going to get a flywheel/clutch/pressure plate that was originally on an 85 and was wondering what I need to get it all set up on the engine from my 1982 GSL.

I heard that I need a counterweight from an automatic to make it work.

EDIT: When I bought my gsl it had its original motor replaced and I dont know if this 12a is actually an 82, is there a way to find out what year the motor is?

Check the flywheel to determine engine series. Mazdatrix has a nice chart to help you match up what you've got. Make sure get an auto trans counterweight from the same series vehicle.

If you have a flywheel and counterweight for the 85, and you have an 83-85 engine, then no, you don't need an auto counterweight.
If your engine turns out to be an earlier engine, you will need the counterweight to match the engine. Whether you source one from an auto, or from mazdatrix (ect) is totally up to you,as they are all basicly them same, other than weighted differently to match the engines needs.

ITS A MUST if you're going to use a non-factory flywheel.

Wait, you said the flywheel is from an 85, but did not say if it was anftermarket flywheel. Stock flywheels cannot use the counterweight, as it is built in....
Please specify whether the flywheel is stock, or aftermarket.

Ok, then once you have the old stocker removed, determine which year it is, and use the appropriate counterweight. Either from an auto, or RB, mazdatrix ect....
Of course, if the clutch is the larger (225mm) on the car now, it's the 83-85 flywheel. 215mm clutch means older than 82 flywheel.
