85 gslse engine into an 85 gsl

what all is needed to put the stock 13b from an 85 gslse into an 85 GSL

my gsl-se got rearended and totaled so im picking up a mint 85 gsl to put my -se engine in

so far i got that i need the engine front brace, the engine (duh) im gonna use the -se tranny, the wiring harness and ECU, my main thing is the ECU bolt in to where the 12a one is?, and is there anything under the hood i need to bring along (keep in mind my 13b has been stripped to the bare bone nececcidys) no vaccum swithc solinoids etc...

Well, I know the ECU will bolt in the same spot (12As have a similar box, but it is just for the solenoids. Are you going carb or staying EFI? If you are staying EFI, you should use the SE fuel hardlines, pump, filter and tank (has a baffled tank unlike the non-SEs). You will need the cross-brace and engine of couse. You may need to run a couple extra wires (SEs have fusible links for the injectors and computer). The SE tranny will work fine. You could use the 12A one if you wanted to instead. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but this should at least give you a start.

you'll need a new engine mount bracket thing, the computer, the engine wiring, intake mani, exhaust mani, whatever new gaskets you'll need, and a large threshold for frustration.

Beer... you'll need beer. And not that wussy American stuff. I could probably send you some Canadian, PM me when you get to doing the wiring

In all honesty, I would say that if you've got two -SEs to gut, and a GSL to mount the engine in you should be pretty set. The main problems with the 13b-into-12a chassis engine swaps come from the headache in wiring, but since you have a full harness and everything you should be fine. Remember, the car's bodies are almost identical, and I don't think Mazda would have changed much of the firewall-side of the wiring harness just for an engine upgrade. It's more economical for them to make the rest of the car almost the same so that for the -SE they just had to drop in a different engine and harness.... And rear end.... and... well okay, so they didn't always take the easiest route

Good luck, I'd be interested to know how it went, but I've heard it's not too bad. A guy at last year's Ottawa meet did the swap in a week (working evenings and weekend on it).

Have fun,
Jon

Jon, the beer in Canada is great. The Canadian beer in US is not the same. I spent some time in Simco, Ontario a few years ago ( don't ask ) and had a pitcher or twelve of Lebatts Blue with a fried perch filet meal and afterwards. It was perfect.

Later, I bought a case of bottles while on vacation in Destin Florida the next year and I had to pour the **** out. Is draft really that much better than bottled ? Or are you Canucks pissing in the export batches ? That **** was so nasty even a lime wedge couldn't kill the stenchy taste ( like you can make a Corona taste OKAY with lime if the beer is really cold AND you're eating jalapeno's ).
