85 GSL starter work on a 83 trans/flywheel?
hey guys theres a 85 gsl at the junkyard here and i want to get the starter out of it for my 5 speed swap.
im wondering if it will be compatible with an 83 trans/flywheel?

Yep.
In the past, I noted that the '82-earlier starters have much smaller gears on them than the '83-85 starters. (8 tooth vs. 11 tooth) I have an '85 and many parts from an '80, and I needed a starter. I took one look at the starters, measured every which way from Tuesday, and said "Damn, the teeth on the '80 starter barely even meet the roots of the teeth on the '85".
Someone told me that they swap. I measured the transmissions ('80, '83, and '85). All the same mounting points. I bolted the '80 starter in. Works fine. Just had to rejig the positive cable, but that was a non-issue.
