'85 GSL-SE Sqeaky Transmission?

My 1985 GSL-SE recently started making a strange noise and I'd like some advice on what it might be (I'm not a big techie BTW).

It is a sqeaking type noise that is only heard when the car is coasting while in gear. The noise is never heard when the accelerator is pressed or when car isn't in gear. It happens in all gears and at all speeds only when in gear with foot off the pedal. The noise seems to come from under the car in the front in the area of the transmission.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

its not a throwout bearing. check the level of oil in the transmission first to eliminate gear whine due to a low level of trans oil. next, for good measure i would inspect the brakes at al four corners for any rubbing or excessive brake dust buildup.

ill look at it since im putting new discs on the front tomorrow, but it dont sound like its my brakes. and i have no extra brake dust but ill check anyways. and if it was the brakes rubbing wouldent the sound continue when you pushed the clutch in? the sounds im getting stop once you push the clutch in.

plus its bout time to change all my fluids again so i will get on the trans oil soon:P

I will be changing the oil tomorrow.....the first and only thing I can do myself with the transmission. We'll see if it has any effect. It's definitely not the brakes.

Hmm, use either royal purple or redline fluid in the tranny. Check the transmission mount to make sure it isnt separated like mine was and grab the driveshaft and make sure the u-joints at either end arent loose. This troubleshooting page by mazdatrix may help you some too to narrow it down. http://mazdatrix.com/g2.htm Good luck!

I changed the transmission oil....that didn't do anything. Still squeaky. I'm not a mechanic...my brother usually works on my car and I will have him check it in the next few weeks.

I'm gonna say pilot bearing. Mine made similar noises until it canalized itself. Is the car ever difficult to get into gear from a stop?

I'm having some big problems with my '85 tranny too. Most of the time, the car wont shift into gear when the car is off. And 4th and 5th are nearly impossible to find if you can get the car into gear. I have a spare engine with a transmission on it still. I was hoping to just swap the transmissions so i could at least have a car that ran. But when i tried to remove the transmission, i ran into a bit of a problem....I have no idea how to do that. I have what seems to be all the bolts off, but it won't budge. What am i missing here? Can someone please tell me how to get it off?

haha Same thing happened to me. What happens is that the pilot bearing will self destruct and essentially seals the input shaft inside the e-shaft. There are a couple places along the bellhousing that you can stick *something* in. Just carefully pry until it inches apart. It took me and my brother about 2 hours with all kinds of screwdrivers (about 5 i think) tire irons, pry bars, wrenches and whatever else we could stick in there to pry the sumbitch off the engine. Just go at it guns blazing, and it will thank you.

My brother finally had a chance to test drive my car. Said the squeeking was definitely the u-joints in the drive shaft. I bought a used drive shaft on eBay and we'll see if that works any better.

My transmission had a worse variation of your problem, as it was squeaky/ whining in all gears except 4th. It would go away when I pressed the clutch. It means your trans bearings are starting to go bad. How many miles does your car have?
