85 GSL-SE Siezed engine 7 days after bought... Rx-7 vet/ my ultimate restoration,PICS

Well a big howdy to everyone!... Names Dean, from Omaha, NE. Cal, Jason I know your prolly on this forum, so high!... Ive owned/worked/modded/restored/ raced Rx-7's since I was 16, 24 now... Took a little hiatus from the rotary scene for about 2 years or so, got an old turbo dodge, blew it up.. Bought a street bike (honda 86 vfr 750, rode the crud out of it, untill it was unsafe to pretty much ride it. Ive had a 83 GSL and a 84 GSL-SE, now I have a 85 SE moving on up!!!

As the title says, I bought a car 2 weeks ago, and last week it siezed on me at idle, cold start wasn't working and engine died 1 min after startup, then siezed. It was running for 20 min about a half an hour before its last time being started . Its a GSL-SE that I bought being told it had good compression, it didn't. Also had some lsd put through it. Thats something I don't want to go to detail on, as it involves a forum member. Hopefully it gets resolved as he seemed like a decent/nice guy.

Anywho, it needed a new tranny/starter already (knew that, starter works but notforlong), bodys in good shape, getting both front fenders new, rear wheel wells are BEAUTIFUL, and all the stock parts were all on the car (as of 2 days ago LOL). I found another 13b 6port, and am going to get a used 48 sized carb and upper intake, racing beat full exaust (secondaries work great) Last gsl-se, the local "race" shop instaled a rb exaust on it for the previouse owner, didnt hook up the hose, carbon lock.. Have a TII tranny, but not sure if I am going to put that in.

As of now, Ive got alot of the unnessasary items out of the car (all ac components, some emmisions/airpump, radiator/fan, airbox/afm) and all of the unessasary brackets, bolts and what not are also taken off. Put in individual bags and labeled, along with the parts going back on. So far I have 109 pounds of stuff taken off the engine bay, thats staying off... SO FAR .. and not to much weight coming in (besides the carb, and the exaust should be lighter than the stock exaust).

When I get the engine/tranny/exaust/everything out, I plan on poweerwashing/scrubbing/painting the engine bay. Painting the newer engine going in, cleaning/revitalizing the hoses. It wont be a full new car restore, but for a pretty reasonable budget.. My engine bay will be looking sharp, along with the paint job later w/ body kit of course. Oh and of course some bigger, wider rims. Just like my last gsl-se.

Heres a couple pics of My old GSL-SE Then a pic of my new GSL-SE with stock engine/everything

Did your old SE have black/yellow seat covers and after blowing the engine you parted it out? If so, it was my young friend and I that bought the engine out of it. Take a look at the last line in my sig for what I've been doing since I was up there the last time. Good to see you back into 7s.

Nothing really to sum up... I think teddy just wanted to hyjack the tread for motor parts its all good.

LOL, I was wondering what happened to that engine. Love the car looking hot!

So I plan on painting the engine/bay... can anyone reccomend some good spray paint (engine paint/ high temp)?

VHT spray paint is my faveorite, I know it would be difficult to do for the whole engine bay, but once properly heat treated the paint is like a cheap powder coat, scratch and chemical resistant. I painted some parts on my motor and exhaust and love the stuff, oil and other nasty stuff wipes right off.

I wish I could take credit for the intake cover... That is custom made out of an aluminum stop sign I believe made by John Terry. He has a TRICKED out 79or80 that is for SCCA AUTOX. This thing needs to be put on the internet as a god amonst cars, he MADE the full suspension/ carbon fiber hood/ that light plastic glass... everything, car was always in top 3 in time out of all cars, raced in FP.

anywho thats his intake and the carb was a Delortto 48 carb. Racing beat header to straightpipe, to dynomax muffler, wired open secondaries, 4.444 rearend. I plan on doing the exact same thing, except having working secondaries and rb presilencer. If anyone has a carb, prefferably sidedraft 48, or 44 if good, the aribox for it, and upper intake manifold for it, to go on 6 port se engine, I plan on buying it in 1 to 3 weeks, would like it to be in somewhat good condition, and bolt on and go (not a carb guy, yet)

Update!!!!!

Well I got an engine, 87 6port with 30k, original block.....so some differences, water pump to engine should work its a little different. Im using my s3 intake for the 87 6port, the ports match, and it fits on the engine, but still different, anyone have any knowledge about this?
OK PICS 1 New engine 2 lower intake dirty, inside was gummy and nasty,,,,until the two cans of carb cleaner hit them. 3 cleaned lower intake 4 water pump housing, painted with 1200 degree paint, did all bolts and pulleys also, so far. Starting on the engine tomarrow, cast irorn painted black, aluminum polished...
PS Im using my PS3 to post this and manage/upload my pics, need a USB keyboard though lol

Some parts curing. Tried duplicolor aluminium 1200 degree paint on the lower intake. Im thinking about doing the rotor housings and front cover also.. A little bit shiny'ier' than Id like, but hey, alot easier to clean than polished aluminium. I might just do the intake with aluminium, cast irorn painted black, and a different color for the rotor housings. IDEAS?

Well after scrubbing the engine down with brake cleaner and a metal brush, then brake cleaner and a scotch brite pad...... THEN scrubbing the engine down with acetone and scotch brite, then washing the engine down with water... Ok that only took from 9am till 6pm, wander why I decided to put that off? lol.

DON'T WORRY, the entire engine is not going to be aluminum paint. This was the best way I could imagine for painting an engine while its assembled... After a week and a heat gun I will mask off the 2 rotor housings (easy to do thats why I am doing it this way) and paint the front, middle, and rear side covers black. My neighbor thought it was cool all silver lol, hes 5.

She did! Had her running on thanksgiving day, had some minor, fixable leaks and only had header so didn't run her long... Engine started on the 2nd or 3rd crank. Got the "dual" racing beat streetport exhaust recently, and all of the fuel pump/regulator ect. Waiting on some parts from euro carb and need to get under my car to put the exhaust on (its 11 degrees so NO).

Oh if harbor freight is a nation wide chain, or theres one around, they have 2' jackstand pairs for 19.99 they had 3' ones for 70 bucks though...

Only other things to do are to find something to keep my dipstick in the engine, it just sits in its hole, needs to be just 1/16 wider on the plastic part. I also need to figure out what to do with the 2 oil lines from the neck of the engine. Oh and hook up my af meter.

What states in the south can I move to and not worry about emissions? Ive been to Mesa az and love it, but guessing my car isn't allowed lol.

LOLz its all good man, no worries

I guess I should take some time to post some pics and updates, when I have time/find camera. Everything in my sig was just bought for the car.... Most of its on.

I used the Duplicolor High temp aluminum and black... the black is great and looks like it will last, the aluminum on the otherhand scares me and makes me wish I didn't pain't with it. Looks ok for now, Ill see what happens in the future.
