85 gsl-se oil cooler hose blowout

hi all...i tried to search for for some leads to my problem(probably simple) but couldnt find anything specific to my prob. anyways, i got my 85 gsl-se going finally and it runs perfect. it has sat for 7 yeas so i did all of the basic stuff to get it to run. i let it idle for about 20 mins and took it out down the road(gently) and about after an 1/8 mile i blew the oil cooler return line and it left another 1/8 mile oil slick till the low oil light came on. ok main question is is there anything besides old age that would cause this to happen. ive got a new filter and oil...i was running 20w-50 oil with a napa oil filter. the oil cooler before take off was nice and warm slighty hot to the touch. im gonna buy new cooler hoses but is there anything that i should check on this car since it sat for so long reguarding the oil flow? thank you

If you're going to be replacing those hoses, have a look at the Stainless Braided (teflon inner core) hoses that are out there. Much more reliable than the rubber, reinforced hoses that Mazda sells, and they dress up an engine bay.

As an investment, they are a good purchase. When you go to install these with the NEW copper crush washers (don't reuse old crush washers), you should tighten them up to hand-tight ONLY. Start the car, and then tighten them with a properly sized wrench until the oil stops dripping. Any more than this, and you'll stand a good chance of creating hairline cracks in your oil cooler bungs that will then leak regardless of how tight you try and make the connections. The more you tighten it, the more it leaks. Same when removing the old lines, get 2 wrenchs of the proper size and put one on the cooler and one on the fitting. DO NOT attempt to unscrew the fittings with only 1 wrench - it will crack the fitting or break off the mount point.

i plan on buy those hoses from mazdatrix and i will be xtra carful about crackin the cooler....do you think i will have and easier time getting the hoses off from the cooler side if i cut them both of and get the cooler on a bench to take them off?

Bench or not, I'd still use 2 wrenches to get them off; the cooler has aluminum mounts that have 'flats' milled into them to allow for a wrench to slide on to hold the cooler steady. Use them.

Cutting the hoses might give you some working room, but it won't make the job any easier. Just go slowy and be cautious. An extra cooler is expensive and unnecessary if you pay attention to what you're doing and don't overtighten things.

If you get the Mazdatrix hoses, you'll also need to buy the adaptors to the engine block. They look like this:



The website explains which ones you'll need to adapt them to the SE engine front cover. Take care,

is the FC oil cooler stronger than the fb? I think I broke mine, it still leaks even with a washer.

Just alittle correction. the washer at the rear hose can be copper where it goes into the block. The washers for the oil cooler need to be the oem aluminum ones. Get those from mazda trix at the same time.
A tip for guys in the future. If you want a indestructable oil coooler hose. Get the adapter fittings from Maxda trix. Then take down your old hose to be matched at the local Napa. they will use 2000psi hydraulic hose that is wire reinforced that will never blow. With the fittings for the ends and the hose you will spend about $45-$60.00 for both. Just a thought. rx7doctor

Has anyone been able to identify the fitting sizes? Racing Beat sells fittings 16mm and 18mm. The goal is to see if I can build a set cheaper than Racing Beat - or is it cheaper to buy Racing Beats set @ $155.

Building my oil cooler set was about as expensive as the rb lines. I was using an 10 lines 4 90* fittings and then the metric adapters for the cooler and the engine side of things.

Had the same thing happen to me

I had the same thing happen to me and when I took the hoses off, it looked like they were just frayed and old. I ended up using these from Mazdatrix:
