85 Gsl problems...

Hi, i've read this forum for a while now, but just recently joined. I bought my 7 out of a junkyard about a year ago, supprisingly not it bad condition, and with a clear title. Since then, i've been fixing small things, and getting it on the road. After fixing the holes in the tirewells, and new rotors, carb rebuild, and many other parts, its finally up and going. Took off the air pump, and most of the emmissions. But it seems to lack power. In comparisions to my fathers 79, its just down right weak. When it goes into idle, it goes down to about 750 rpms, but on occasion just drop down and dies. Particulary when im shifting. If i give it gas hard off the start, it will either hessitate, or die. Anyone have any ideas on something wrong with this? I don't know too much about 7's but im learning. Oh yeah, please don't say to get the compressions tested, im a practially broke college student. And if i have to found out my compression is blow, im gonna cry.

Other stuff that might be handy
miles on engine : 127K
Oil changed every 3k since i got it.
New air, oil, fuel filter.
New plugs/wires
Carb rebuilt
Koni struts

Any suggestions at this point would be handy, i really want my 7 to run like it should... Thanks

You never know without a compression check. Sounds like you might have a vacuum leak. spray carb cleaner around the intake and stuff while the car is running, if you get a surge of RPMs you got a vacuum leak. It is difficult to track some of these leaks down, just keep trying.

BTW you don't still have a cat on there do ya?

The cat is the one part of emmisions that i didn't take off, i don't have enough cash for a presilencer, or even straight pipe at this time, or else, that thing would be gone as well. Vacuum leaks... i'll check that when i get back from class today, thanks.

You could have a bad accerator pump or blocked passages that are stopping flow. I regretfully rebuilt a Nikki carb and it some how got plugged and ran like ****. So I took it back off and cleaned every facet everywere on the carb. That took care of it. Be sure you have the tiny ball and weight that go in the passages correctly. Make sure you have the adjustor set correctly and turn it in and out as too much gas in the accerator pump being sqirted is also bad.

I am uncertain of why it stalls at idle...raise the idle and also be sure your timing is correct and idle mix. Spray around for Vacuum leaks ofcourse too...

Well, i adjusted the idle this morning, and it didn't die on me. I think im going to check the timing on it, i hope thats whats wrong with it. I just ordered some new plus/wires, to see if that might help the power loss... presilencer too. *grin*... wish me luck.
