85 GSL Idle

i posted about that car i was gonna buy .., well im trying to get it running and someone said theyd help me if i bought it so here i am .. the guy said he replaced the carb and exaust and clutch before it lost power like 2 years ago.. its been sitting since then because no one would fix it for him cause its a rotary HAH, well i got there put a battery in, started cranking, wouldnt start, each time it got better tho, then i poured some atf down the carb and bought some premium gas and put it in the tank (cause the old fuel smelled bad) and then we cranked awhile and got it to run.. reved it to about 3 grand for awhile and got the atf out. then when i turned the car off it wouldnt crank over again.. so i poured more atf in, same thing. the atf is out cause it doesnt smoke anymore.. but it will not idle and it will not start without turning it over a long time or pouring atf in the carb.. could this be an exaust problem? or maybe a carb problem? he said they rebuilt it and it was fairly new.. i need some suggestions or help? anyone else had this problem?

Let the ATF sit in there for a day or two to eat up all the carbon that's binding up the Apex seals.

A better way to add the ATF, if to use a turkey baster and about 3 inches of rubber hose thats small enough to fit on the end of the turkey baster.

Shoot it in the lower spark plug holes.

Then crank the engine over ONE revolution. (You can mark the main pulley with a piece of tape and yank on the belts. It's easy to turn.)

Shoot more in, and crank over once more and shoot more in. (Total of three seperate shots, each one maybe half an ounce to a full ounce.)

Repeat for the other lower hole on the other rotor.

Also clean the carb because pouring it down the carb tends to gum the carb up.

Hose it down with a can of Carb cleaner for now. It should be allright for now. Just don't let the ATF sit in the carb.

Let's just get the engine to start and run on it's own for now, then worry about a stable idle, emissions, getting extra HP and all the little nitpicks later on.

Look in the carb next time after you shut it off and see if its overflowing with fuel. My car flooded like that when I first bought it. I'd have to hold my foot to the floor and crank like a bitch to get it to start. One time it spit raw gas out the tailpipe at least 5 feet.

same here, got mine after sitting up for two years, wouldnt stay idleing, wish i could remember what all i did to get it working, but it finally did, i did have to remove the gas tank, it was clogged as well as the fuel filter, might blow out the fuel lines, and i had to replace the accelerator pump on carb, about 20 bucks, i didnt mess with the carb adj stuff untill later cause it might be set right and something else was bad, just try one thing at a time and remember what u did so u dont have to do it again later, do the mmo treatment and let it sit for a day, in the mean time, look at the gas tank for crude,,,good luck,,,im sure youll getit going.......

ok i know nothing about carbs so im gonna try and explain this as well as i can.. i check the 4 holes and by the two smaller ones is some kinda lip/hole type thing and it shot gas out one of the times when my friend shut the engine off.. it shot it into both the primary and secondary (big and small?) holes. and those holes were full of gas too, i could see gas in them anyways (i dunno if that means it full?).. and its BAD gas it smells horrible, so we're draining the fuel tank and putting premium in with some fuel treatment. but i dunno what to do about the carb? is it suppose to do that? it only shot out gas one of the 3 times i attempted to start it. but theres fuel in those holes.

That ***** not supposed to happen. You'll probably have to pull the top of the carb off to unstick the floats. Try tapping on the float bowl of the carb with a screwdriver first. Sometimes that helps.

Well, this is a totally non-mechanic uh... post, but my 85 GSL doesn't idle until it's run for about 10 minutes (without moving at all, just sitting there and giving it enough gas to keep it above 1000RPM)

After about 10 minutes of keeping it going, I can let off and it will idle at around 700 or 900, don't remember.

If there's enough room, the next time you get it started, try to drive it in a small circle or at least get the wheels moving some. Once I get mine moving it's all good.

The **** is broken...

The previous 2 owners were pretty abusive to it. I'm still in the process of getting all the outside parts put on... The interior is my second priority. (It's currently not street-legal due to the lack of a headlight and bumper)

Thats why it wont run when its cold, not using the choke kinda does that to a carb'd car......
