84SE - Oscillator relay...NEED ONE!
84SE - Oscillator relay...NEED ONE!
Okay, guys - after 100's of $$$ in small parts to try and fix what I thought was a fuel injector problem, I've identified that there is a small relay (or something) that is located directly in front of the battery on my 84SE that is called an oscillator and is responsible for handling the signal coming from the electronic choke, water temperature sending unit, and routing this information to the EFI CPU to calculate fuel/air mixture.
This part, based on my Haynes manual, and various troubleshooting tips here and around the 'net, seems to be the crux of my idle and acceleration problems, and on top of that, now that I've removed the Oscillator relay, the car has regained much of it's power and seems to idle better.
Once I found the part, I saw that battery acid over years of battery changes, cleanings, etc., had sprayed down onto the connector and killed at least one of the electrical connector pins - the green wire was not connected, and white with acid corrosion - each of the other connector pins was about as bad, and disassembly of the Oscillator relay revealed that the electronics inside (resistors, a MOSFET, and other stuff) was molten into a mass of black insulation and melted wiring. Problem that needs to get fixed.
Now: I can't find one. Mazdatrix doesn't liste a part number for one, and I'm afraid the dealer is going to want my first born. Anyone have an angle on one, or know of another source to get one???
I think replacing this part may solve my timing/idle fuel mix issues and is GREATLY NEEDED! All help appreciated.
Also, it looks like a standard 4-pin relay, but has a separate grounding wire that is on it's own single-pin connector, outside of the 4-pin connector which attaches to it's base. The Oscillator is mounted via a metal tab with a single-phillips head screw mounted to the backside of the driver's headlight bucket well, right next to the headlight retractor motor. TIA,

I'm not sure if that's your issue. It's in all styles of the RX-7... It's linked to problems with the headlights on/low coolant/low oil noisemaker... I think.

My current beater had the oscillator meltd by battery acid too. I have current idle issues also, but I'm pretty sure they're related to the CPU and ECU.
I did go ahead and replace my oscillator from the dealer. I don't remember what I had to pay for it but I do remember the guy told me there "3" left in the parts bin in this country and then that was it.
I think the oscillator interfaces with the CPU and buzzer system on the SE's.
