84SE - Lightweight flywheel users... Q's

Am interested in a lightened flywheel for my SE, and am looking at the Racing Beat offerings. Would like some information and feedback from users who ACTUALLY ARE USING one of the RB flywheels (either lightweight steel, or the superlight aluminum).

Things I am specifically interested in:

1) Changes in driveability
2) Changes in shifting smoothness
3) Increased acceleration
4) idle smoothness and tuning
5) Installation with Auto counterweight

With the money involved for these $450-$550, I want to make sure that this is a good investment before putting the money down and putting this in with my replacement 13b-EFI engine this summer. Let me know, and TIA,

I have used both in the past....

1) most notable here, you will have to slip the clutch more and use more throttle as well to get your car moving from a standing start; launching at the drag strip, etc. This becomes more apparent when parallel parking on a hill and driving slowly over rough roads.
The aluminum one is too light for daily use, especially if youre accostumed to the stocker.. others my tell you differently. No fun in traffic with a heavy duty clutch. Once you get out of first gear its nice, especially during spirited drives/ autocross/ road course.

2) shifting becomes slightly smoother.

3) yes, engine acceleration is increased, particularly in lower gears. Lightened flywheels allow the engine to spool up quicker, allowing it to get to up into the powerband... exhaust sounds cool when you rev the engine up

4) idle is unaffected.

5) I got my engines with the flywheel already installed.
Currently my SE engine is stock as well as the flywheel... a lightened steel flywheel and not an aluminum is what I will be upgrading to with my S5 engine swap. The advantage of the aluminum one is the ability to change the face once its worn down.. thatll take awhile to happen though unless youre rough on the clutch.

If you have the money to spare then by all means get yourself one.

I have an '84 GSL-SE that is completely stock except for a Racing Beat 16# steel flywheel and a Centerforce II clutch with stock disc.

I absolutely love this flywheel. The driving experience is *greatly* enhanced. There are no negatives. Acceleration is noticeably quicker, and this is invaluable in traffic.. you want to occupy a certain spot? no problem.. you're there almost as fast as you can think it. I drive long distances (cruise control) on a regular basis, and many city miles also, and this flywheel makes me very happy indeed.

From what I hear, anything lighter than 14 - 16# and you start to deal with negatives. So these weights are apparently the perfect weights for a street car. Steel, of course, for safety, and you don't need no stinkin' scattershield to take it to the track.
