84 SE is faster than I thought.

Has anyone noticed that the 84-85 GSL-SE is actually faster than some of the 2nd gens according to several credible sources? According to carforums.net, which gets is times from Car & Driver, Motor Trend, Road and Track, and the manufacturers themselves, the 84-85 SE does 0--60 in 7.8 seconds and the quarter mile in 15.9 seconds. Check out the times below for other 7's. All the times are for stock un-modified vehicles. Like the title of my post says: 84 GSL-SE is faster than I thought.

1984 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE 7.8 15.9
1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL 9.9 17.4
1986 Mazda RX-7 GXL 8.5 16.5
1987 Mazda RX-7 Turbo 6.6 15.2
1988 Mazda RX-7 Conv. 9.7 17.5
1989 Mazda RX-7 GTU 8.5 16.5
1989 Mazda RX-7 Turbo 6.7 15.1
1990 Mazda RX-7 GTU 8.6 16.7
1990 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II 6.3 14.9
1991 Mazda RX-7 Conv. 8.8 16.7
1991 Mazda RX-7 Infini IV 7.0 14.9

.7 diff between a turbo, good driver vs bad driver could take the win in that case.

The SE is lighter than many 2nd gens and it has the BEST torque curve of any naturally aspirated, fuel injected rotary.

Agreed. I drove a friend's 86, and it did not feel faster at all. If you really think about it, how could a N/A stock 2nd gen be quicker with only 11 more horses and more weight?

It greatly depends on which 2nd gen you are talking about.
All 86-88 2nd gens have the same 146hp engines, except the TII.That ranges from a stripped out 4 lug BASE weighing in at 2600lbs,all the way up to the porker Vert weighing in at a hair over 3000lbs.
The GSL-SE weighing 2600lbs was fully loaded on options and had 11 less HP,but it was only 5lbs short on torque over the FC engine, and it made that torque sooner and longer. A stock GSL-SE and a stock FC BASE would be a close one.Strip a GSL-SE down to the basic trim of the 2nd gen BASE and it would probably be only 2300-2400lbs.....no contest. It all depends on if you want luxury and options with your N/A 13B.
