84 rx now starts but runs like crap, help?

I finally got the rx to start but it will only start with starting fluid and it wont idle. Before it was getting way to much fuel so i tweaked the mixture screw and got it to start but every time i have to start it with starting fluid. It will stay running but i have to keep my foot on the gas pedal or i have to pull out the choke to keep it running. The other day it cranked right up without starting fluid but i still had the idle issue, but now it wont start on its own. I am running out of ideas. Please help!

When i got the car it had no fuel pump and no tank. I had the same problem before rebuilding the carb. It has a rebuilt carb, new tank, fuel pump, rotor button, plugs, wires, fuel filter, water pump, and all new fuel lines.

I rebuilt the carb, It is the second one i have done on a mazda. I know she is rebuilt right. I have done a few, everything set to spec. I have checked and rechecked the float settings and they are good.

What about timing and distributor, are you sure you are getting proper spark, whats the compression like in the rotors?

have you checked for vaccume leaks? check the large vaccume hose that runs from the anti afterburn valve to the intake manifold. what kind of plugs did you use? i would not have messed with the mixture screw much. are you sure that you have adequate spark and are getting adequate fuel? check the front sight glass and not the amount of gas in there. check what i've listed in the vaccume lines and teh fuel and sight glass and post back. the sight glass will tell you a lot.

Cool thanks man, that damn mixture screw is where im screwing up. The manual says back off 3 turns, but if i go that far its geting way to much fuel.

If your car has not ran in a while, you could have a stuck seal.

It could also be the AAB valve itself no?

well, i would assume his car would have two anti afterburn valves. one is on the bottom of the air control valve and its job is to supply fresh air to the front primary port during deceleration and the second one is attatches to the carb via two 10mm bolts and its job is to supply fresh air to the rear secondary port during deceleration. if an aav were stuck, i believe it would increase the idle.
