Cool 84 gsl-se won't go into gear!

I took my car to a rotary mechanic to fix a problem of it not going into gear. The mechanic said that when he opened up the transmission (or something) it was dry, no liquid and that was the cause of the problem. he said he filled it up and the car worked good for about 2 months..now the same problem. can anyone help? there must be a leak or something.

thanks.

Sounds like you need to replace your clutch master and slave cylinder. Does your pedal stay on the floor at all after trying to get it into gear? If the pedal comes back up then you may have to only replace the slave. However, while you are in there removing the slave go ahead and replace the master and the clutch hose connecting the two. Mazdatrix has a nice stainless clutch hose.

The only reason i say all this is because this was the first thing i replaced by myself on my GSL-SE. Defer to other members for further suggestions and ideas.

Good luck.

he said the transmission was dry ..not his clutch..you have a bad seal ..for what it's worth you can probably pick up a used one here from one of the members.if the trans was run dry twice I wouldn't trust it..and to have someone replace the seal,it would be about the cost of gettin a cheap used transmission that was not run dry..and if you are droppin the trans..you may as well change the clutch too..my $.02.

Good catch on that! Sometimes my reading comprehension completely sucks. That does sound like a leaky seal. Again good luck.

Sounds kind of funny to me. If the trans leaked out 2.1 quarts over 2 months the entire car underbody from the trans back would be soaked in oil. Not to mention oil on the ground. Ask me how I know. Mine was slinging gear oil out so bad that it even got into the car.

Also, in case the two events are unrelated, it could be a bad pilot bearing.
