Talking 84 gsl-se passed emissions with a partially HOME MADE exhaust!!!!!!!

Hey everybody, I'm TOTALLY psyched right now, I just FLEW through emissions with NO problem, after previously failing it. Here's the old results:

Hydrocarbons (HC) : I had 523 PPM, state requires 220 PPM = FAILED
Carbon Monoxide (CO): I had .8 PCT, state requires 1.20 = PASSED
NOx: not tested
Carbon Dioxide: I had 13.03 PCT, need to have more than 6.0 PCT = PASSED

so, as you can see, I wasn't even CLOSE on the hydrocarbons...

here's what I did (and no, I didn't bribe anybody)

first, I kept my header on there.

then, bolted up the stock catalytic converter and hooked it up with some hose I had lying around (the previous owner cut the hose when he put on the straight pipe)

unfortnaly, when my straight pipe was put on, the pipe that was used from the cat to the muffler had been taken and cut so they could use the same gaskets. This left me the problem of not having any pipe that would properly fit from the catalytic converter to the muffler.

Here I come adavance auto plus...

I bought two "flex pipes", a connector for the two pipes, and a adaptor to go into my power pulse muffler.

I had to cut the pipes, bend the pipes, cut them a littler more, and jam one end into the cat, and jam the other end into the adaptor which was also jammed into the muffler. Then I used that "exhaust bandage" stuff ($2/ bandage at a.a.p.) around the pipe side that went into the muffler, since it didn't have a clamp. Then I clamped down where the two flex pipes met (I did all this stuff off of the car once I had already fit it). When I clamped these flex pipes down, it made holes all over the place, so I got some of my dad's exhaust repair... um... goo, or something. It's basically a caulk like substance that hardens, and is designed for exhaust repair so it can handle real high temps. Then, I put it back on the car and let everything set overnight.

another thing I did a few days ago was close up my 5th and 6th port actuators (I normally have them wired open)

then today, I drove it around for about 20 minutes (very slowly, as this home made exhaust was held up by surgical wire, and was very very low) Then, I parked it, and set the TPS with two multimeters. My tank was about 1/8 full, so it was pretty low. I put in two 12 oz. bottles of dry gas, then drove it VERY gingerly to the gas station and put in about 4-5 gallons of gas (regular, not premium or anything) Then I drove it down to the emissions station, which is only about a mile from my house. I waited in line for about 8 minutes (no prob, as it gave me some time to chill out and crank some music in my nice new system ). Then, It was my turn. I drove over the rollers VERY slowly, still banged the hell out of my home made exhaust, but thankfully it stayed on, and here were the results of the test this time:

Hydrocarbons (HC) : I had 98 PPM, state requires 220 PPM = PASSED!!!
Carbon Monoxide (CO): I had 0.00!! PCT, state requires 1.20 = PASSED
NOx: not tested
Carbon Dioxide: I had 14.50 PCT, need to have more than 6.0 PCT = PASSED

overall: PASSED!!!!!!

this means I don't have to buy more exhaust components, and my straight pipe is going to go back on the car in about twenty minutes (to make sure the pipes have sufficiently cooled down) AND now with the money, I'm going to buy potenza tires for my 16" rims!!!! I'm sooooooooo psyched!!!

I am on spring break now and forgot to bring home my digital camer wire, but I do have the camera, so I'll take pix of my ghetto system and upload them when I get back to school on Sunday.

WOOHOO!!!!

I laugh at some of the things people have to do to pass there rotary emission beasts and then put back the quasy-legal exhaust! LOL! ANyway, I am pretty glad the Twin Cities in MN don't have it, but they used to till the air cleaned up from too many new emission compliant vehicles on MN roads took care of that and MN law revoked the emission testing done here. I am sure I would be pulling some seriously funny scemes to pass for the test too if I had too! Ofcourse, the performance exhuast would be back on in NO time.

yeah, gotta love the straight pipes!

Heh, but the 16" rims don't fit, I'm going to start a new thread after a search on wheel spacers (or something, I dunno what I need, the tire is rubbing against the strut/spring, that can't be good.

ok, well, like i said, I started a new thread in the wheels section, but that's a relatively slow section... basically my question is this:

If I am rubbing with a 205/55 x 16 tire, will a smaller tire help at all? is it even possible? I'm rubbing the strut right where the spring is attatched. I don't know the offset, or even the width, all they say on the inner side are "7%Jx16H2" I assume it means it is 16 x 7, but I don't know. Thanks! (it's just rubbing a little bit, but enough so that it is always touching)
