Unhappy 84 GSL-SE Hydro Carbon Problem

I have a 1984 GSL-SE and just incase you dont know already that is a 13B. when I had bought the car I had known that it wouldent pass emissions. HAHA silly me I had thought that I would be able to find someone or some shop that would be able to help me out with it just to find out that even two Mazda Dealer here in Washington would give me the old run around with it just to tell me that they wont even look at it. I ended up getting a new cat put on it from a none emissions certifed shop like a fool and took it to DEQ and found that dident fix it and that it fails all around but manly Hydro Carbon with 2000 ppm plus and i know that is a lot but is there anyone who could maybe in the vancouver wa area or in the forums that could lead me on hopefully the right path with fixing the problem?

From what I've read the hydrocarbons in exhaust are created mainly from burning excess oil or unburnt fuel. Now that could stem from a couple different issues Oil metering pump or worn seals allowing excess oil to remain on the side plates during combustion.

i would start by replacing the plugs then the wires and cap if they havent been replaced in awhile and make sure your timing is correct.. if this was all done prior to the test then you have to start looking deeper

a link to your emmisions controls are here http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/files/manuals/1985_RX7_FSM/85RX7(4B)Fuel&emissions_13B.pdf

have it tuned before going in,try timing advance and leaner fuel, it is risky so be careful not to blow your motor!

rx7doctor has a very good thread floating around here on what needs to be done prior to emission testing. He is also our top guy for troubleshooting the SE engine and emissions. Since I don't have to worry about emissions where I'm at, those parts are some of the 1st ones to go. Doc is a mod, his name can be found at the bottom of the page. You might try PMing him for a link to his thread.

Welcome to the forum and the Darkside. In my sig line you will find a link to the online FSMs along with other rotary related reading material. Download whatever you need and read it. There is a step by step flow chart for diagnosing emission related problems.

I tried the Denatured Alcohol trick with my truck just yesterday. Last emissions test two years ago, I was dead on the limit for Oxides of Nitrogen, but was beautiful on Hydrocarbons and Carbon Monoxide...

It burns hotter, so NOx was higher. I failed.

Something to be aware of. You've gotta get all three numbers to play.

BTW, The truck never ran better. It didn't ping at all like it usually does under heavy load. I figure if Alcohol is 110 octane and I had a gallon or so of 87 in the tank, I was running somewhere in the high 90's Octane and flushing out crap in the fuel system.

After reading this there are other factors to consider on the SE.
The coolant temp sensor and the AFM operation.

i didnt get the alchol trick to work on mine. If the car isnt burning all the fuel it wont make a difference what your running. thats why i failed Hydrocarbons but now emissions are gone woo. I guess it works on some vehicles tho my friend did it in his truck and it worked.
