84 Gsl-se***oil Cooler ????***

wELL, MINE LEAKS. i LOOKED AT IT ON THE CAR, i SEE NO CRACKS AT ALL IN THE COOLER.OIL IS COMING FROM THE HOSE AREA . I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT OFF YET BUT, I WANTED TO ASK THIS. IS THERE SOME KINDA WASHER BETWEEN THE HOSE LINE AND OILCOOLER? iF SO, DO THEY WEAR OUT AND LEAK? WHAT DO YOU THINK I SHOULD DO AT THIS POINT? TAKE IT OFF? WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST STEPS IN FINDING CAUSE OF THIS LEAK?...ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECAITED AS I NEED TO DO THIS ASAP....CAN'T REALLY DRIVE IT ... THANKS....CJF

there is a small flat crush washer inbetween oil hose and cooler. they don't traditionally leak. it's probabally the housing that the hose threads into. they tend to stress crack over time. some ppl will weld it back, others junk it.

you should take it off and inspect it for cracks.

could also be the hose has started to unthread, that would be an easy fix.

Yup, stress crack is what you've got

Very common on SE oil coolers it seems. Happened to mine. I replaced with one from my old '79 for now. Works fine, but won't bolt in on both sides.

I'm taking mine to a radiator shop this weekend to see if it can be fixed. I'll follow up with result.

Yes indeed, this is common for SE's. Mine leaks as well, at the connection and I suspect the "crushable washers" aren't doing their job....I was told to switch to a 2nd gen oil cooler. Supposedly they seal better. I'll know soon as I'm going to tackle this issue with a 2nd gen cooler...

You cant see the cracks until you take the cooler out and CLOSELY inspect it.

In the interest of saving threads, I'm going to pop a quick question in here. The oil cooler on my 1980 has sprung a small leak that leaks a high pressure. I've been told by the local rad shop that they are irrepairable because they are 1 piece aluminum or something???

Anyways I couldn't find any first gen oil coolers on my island but I did come across a guy with a few 86-88 coolers for $150 CND. I need the oil lines from an FC because one of the outlets is on the top, right? So this must means I cannot mount the cooler under the rad like the current one on my SA. Anyone have some tips on the mounting? Thanks, George.

Dumb idea....could I mount it upside down so there's one inlet on the side and the other one the bottom

Question 2nd Gen Oil Coolers into GSL-SE??

Has anyone actually done this retro-fit into a GSL-SE?

Here is the mounting issue of my SA oil cooling into my SE. Apparently, because of the suspension tweek they did in 1984-85 Rex's, the front sway bar sits closer to the oil cooler. The SE's oil cooler's are designed so the top oil line angles up and around the sway bar. The SA's are designed so the oil lines are parallel. So, I had to mount my SA's just a little tilted. Been like that for over a year and not a hint of a problem.

However, using a 2nd Gen oil cooler interests me as since the feed (top) oil line sits on the top, it would give that extra room the sway bar requires. I would think that the 2nd gen oil lines would work, assuming their length works for a 1st Gen installation. But, you could always have some custom "Earls" wire braid type made.

If someone has done this application, please comment as to any modifications you had to do otherwise.... such as the two side mounting points. I'm going to check this one out!
