84? GSL to buy?

its a used car dealer selling a white gsl, the passenger fender front end has been wrecked, all the panels are replaced and they are primered. the rest of the body is in nice condition, and the interior is too. there are 90,000 miles on it. i havent heard it run yet, because he doesnt have the key yet. but he says it runs well. the front drivers side wheel something is messed up. i have a feeling i can fix it myself. he wants $800 for it if he has to let it go for that... also, there is no rust on the body, or in the wheel wells.

i was wondering whether some of you think it is a good idea to buy this as a WINTER driver. i live in southern indiana, but ive never seen how a stock carb'd 1st gen does in the winter. are cold starts a real pain in the ***? do they flood a lot in the winter? my car is too powerful for the snow in my opinion, and for my driving skills, and i need a solution to the bad gas milage it gets. and i love first generations. id like to hibernate my car for the winter and try to work on it a bit. both of these cars have potential.

Patience, Grasshopper. Some of us work during the day.

If the car is tuned properly and the choke / engine is suitable, it should be fine as a winter car in terms of starting and being reliable. A properly functioning 12a has no problem starting or flooding in the cold.

However, generally these are not good cars for the snow. A skilled driver can make them work in the snow. You do have to pay attention to the rear end coming around, be gentle with the throttle, and gentle with the steering and brakes. Good tires are important.

In any case, if you make it through the winter fine, you should be able to sell it in the spring for what you have in it.

Some people work for a living, I don't, but some people do.

Oh, and your question. I can't help on the carb part. For winter driving I's suggsest 4 all weather tires. especially with the lsd. Mine gets squirelly enough in the rain, I can't wait for the snow.

If you cannot get the car painted before snow and salt season, I would suggest getting a seal coat shot on it. Primer offers little to no protection from moisture and rust. Come spring you would need to sand the primer down to bare metal and you'ld be amazed how much rust is under the paint.

I'm wondering the same thing about the cold. I put a mikuni on this summer and at 90 degrees outside, the swept intake was almost ice cold to the touch, can't wait to see what it does when it's 70-80 degrees colder outside. May just inside.

mine had a racing beat holley on it last winter, and I never had a problem with starting or flooding in cold weather, not until the carb went to hell and had to replace it, but that was in the spring....
