84 GS electrical problems

OK, so last weekend, my wife and I put the engine and trans back into the car. Right now she won't do a damn thing. The lights and other electrical stuff works. Battery is good. But, turn the key and nothing. A relay around the engine clicks, but the starter makes no noise.

Had the starter checked out at a parts store and it passed A.O.K. so its not that.

Yanked all the rats nest, so there are a few electrical connectors loose, but re-attached them and still nothing.

Anyone have any suggestions to check out?

I think you have a problem . Actually, try checking all your wires again. Everything from the ignition to the starter, through the relay and everything...Obviously the power isint getting to the starter, so theres something amiss...I know im not much help, and all Im telling you is basically common sense, but at least I tried .

PS - Im thinking bad ground maybe...

Double check at the starter. You ahvge a BIG positive battery cable... Then you have a couple small wires. See taht at least one has 12Volts power when you hold the key to "CRANK" position. The other small wires goto the hot and cold start assist motors.

i deal with things like that all day at work! -
does the relay only click on start postion?? or ign?? if clicks only on start u may have a faulty relay.

what i would look at -
1. r the wires on the starter?? Big - battery, small - from the start postion on the ign switch??
2. do u have power at the starter?? big should power all the time from the battery, the small one get someone to turn the key. and u should have voltage there. earth dont worry engine is a earth. but i would cheak and make the connection on the earth leads arent dirty.

u still have any problem e-mail me.

I'm going to be replacing the engine myself soon in my 85 GS. Are there any precautions that I should take to avoid such problems?

Yeah, check for fuel at the firewall, and if your not getting fuel, try listening for the pump. Maybe its not working, check wires and what-not if its not. If it is working, check your filter. If your filters clear, and you have a working pump, Id say clogged lines (obviously). Also, is it possible that you have the fuel lines on the carb switched so the return is hooked up to the inlet? I think that they are different sizes to prevent this, but you never know .

PS - If only I was this much help all the time

You will find the people here to be alot more helpful here then on the xceedspeed forum,
i'm not knocking their forum but you dont take a lamborghini to a dodge dealership for help.

you will find everyone here eager to answer any question you have,
i'm usally one of them,
probably cause i spent so much time asking questions years ago.
"daddy whats it mean when my car goes brap brap pop pop pop pop pop and the guy behind me says i keep burning his front bumper?"

woops,
should of looked at the dates,
i asked her if you guys were part of the forum and she said no and told me to bookmark it so i just figured you guys werent members until i recently seen a post from you,

anyway even though the cars got spark the rx7 is very fussy about having enough spark,
i have had tons of problems with dizzy caps and wires,
if you havent put on a new dizzy cap and rotor since the new clutch id do so,
also throw in some new plugs if their old.

this stuff may or may not fix the problem, but its one last thing on the list that it could be,
plus its routine maintanince anyway.

does pulling the choke out help at all?
did you check spark for leading and trailing?

how does it sound with the new exhaust?

cap, plugs, and rotor has 0 miles on them.

only tried the trailing though. when it stops raining I'll give the leading a try.

pulling the choke and changing accelerator position doesn't help one bit

Alright, more info.

Both plugs have good spark.

Fuel enters the carb, fills the bowls, and goes back to the tank.

Never enters the jets or engine.

Jets aren't blocked either.

Suggestions as to what next? Did I take off something I wasn't supposed to? Does anything specifically control this?

when i did the atf trick on my 1st owned 1st gen i filled the engine and with the last bit i filled the carb to the top,
let it sit over night and voila
better compression and my car worked way better,
the secondarys were so gummed up the didnt even work,
the only thing i was getting at full throttle was more air,
but after the atf the carbie worked just fine,
of course if yours isnt gummed up then this doesnt help one bit,

but remeber you did have the carbie off when i was down,
are you absolutely sure everything is back in its original place and you have all fuel lines hooked up in their proper places?

also did you block up the plate on the side of your intake?
if not thats probably it,
the carb works off vacume and with no vacume you get no fuel.
check the plate and the stuff i mentioned above.

I didnt read all the post by "Yanked all the rats nest, so there are a few electrical connectors loose, but re-attached them and still nothing." Grabed my attention. Some wires should be left unplugged...If you have a manual i would refer to it and trace your steps. Even the Haynes Manual will work in this case for you. Hope this helpz
