84 dies periodically

I have an 84 rx7 that is essencially stock. Now and again it will die. I can hear the fuel pump get quiet when this happens. Its a holley red so its kinda loud. But it will get much quieter, and then the floats seem to go empty and the car dies. I can however get it started pretty much right away if i take the air filter off and then put it back on. this fuel delivery syatem has been through a lot. The tank was rusty but now has a clean 80 tank that seems to vent correctly. It passes the pressure test at emissions so thats a goo dsign that its hooked up right. The fuel pump is like the 5th one in 2 months. The others ate enough rust while running and air while testing that they all died. the fuel lines seem to be clear as i can blow through them with ease whth both ends disconnected from the carb at one end and dhe pump at the other. The carb has been rebuilt and cleaned of rust more than once. I didnt realize that the tank was full of rust the first time i rebuilt the tank. (not to mention that i put two of the jets in the wrong place the first time.) I have the fuel pump wired to the leading coil. The fuel filter is ofcourse new. If I pull the fuel line off when this happens it sprays like a fire hose.

Maybe the coil is not always recieving full power. but then i should stilll be able to limp along on a slow fuel pump. maybe there is rust that is flapping around in the carb like it got pinched in a gasket when it was gettin g put together. but then this car has been doing this since i got it all be it for different reasons aka rusty tank and filters. maybe i need to pull the fuel line off the the carb before turning the key into the off position or removing the air filter as the air filter removal technique seems to make the car run right again. Also the car seems to run fine with the venting solenoid unplugged. I think that the venting solenoid wirks too as it clicks when i give it power or connect it with the car in the on position. I dunnno man. Weird stuff. there arent too many places that there really could be a problem. Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Brian

It looks like you are as confused as i am with this one. The car didnt die at all today so thats a good thing. maybe there is just a bit of rust still making its way through the fuel system. I'll just keep driving it and see if thats the case.
