84-85 replacement U joints

I saw a thread on replacement u joints for the 86+ but it didn't say about the 84-85 U joints. Anyone know where I can get a pair? Mazdatrix only offers up to '83 as most of us know...wonder if ReSpeed could make a lighter driveshaft w/ u-joints like mazdatrix does for the 86+

The u-joints in '84-85 are not replaceable, at least not in the usual easy way.

A driveshaft shop *may* be able to replace them, but IIRC they're pressed into place. Oftentimes it's easier just to grab a junker driveshaft than to try and replace the U-joint.

Edit: read here on mazdatrix:

The "Aftermarket" driveshafts we offer are completely new, balanced and ready to install. They incorporate traditional replaceable u-joints so you can rebuild them if you ever wear them out.

You can get a new u-joint for it BUT not many shops would do it as they have to grind the caps on the orig driveshaft. Not worth their time.

Down here in LA, there is a shop who would re-do the entire driveshaft for roughly $250. thats new yoke, new large replaceable u-joints and re-balanced. Check out your local V8 shops.

Same here. It's almost easier and cheaper to have a local shop build a new shaft from scratch. They can then build it with replaceable/greasable u-joints.

Rockford sells replacable u-joints for 84-91, but you probably need a press to get them out. Here are the instructions and part listings.

I replaced the U-joints on my 81 but it didn't really work. I tried several brands but the problem is the same. Lots of shaft vibration. Finally bought a new shaft from Mazda. This worked. My point is that even if you can find replacement joints you will need to adsjust/balance the assembly.

Considering what Mazdatrix' "aftermarket" driveshafts for S3 FBs costs, it's worth it just to get that and then never worry about your driveshaft ever again
