i have an 83 rx7 limited. it looks to have the stock exhaust but i'm not sure. it needs to be replaced badly so i'm looking to replace it but i'm not sure what to replace it with. it has a cat and then what looks to be a real small cat just before the normal one. what is it? also i plan on replacing from the manifold back and i noticed that there is what looks to be an EGR tube going from the exhaust manifold to the cat.

my first question is i want it to have a nice sound and not just sound like stock. should i leave the cat out? muffler yes or no? glass pack?

my second question is do i really need to have the pipe that goes from the manifold to the cat and if so what's the best way to re-route that?

You need a Racing Beat exhaust. Go to Racingbeat.com and check out what they've got. As far as the tube going to the cat, it is there simply to keep the converter from overheating. You'll notice the big belt driven air pump on the lower passenger side of the engine bay. If I recall correctly the air pump's job is to send air back to the catalytic converter to cool it off.

So, the cliff notes version is, get yourself a Racing Beat exhaust, and do some searches relating to emissions removal. If you make the jump to getting rid of the catalytic converter you can REALLY clean up your engine bay and simplify many things. Do some searches. The info is out there numerous times...

I just replaced the "Bosal" muffler that came with my 84 SE with the Racing Beat Power Pulse Main Muffler. It does sound better than before but I wish it was a bit louder when I get on the gas. Maybe it needs to break in; there's only a few miles on it right now.
