83 gs, stumbles at 2.5k, almost impossible to drive.

As some of you know I recently got a 83 GS from a junkyard to fix up as my winter car. The shutter valve was messed up so I just plugged it up. After doing this the car wouldn't run for ****, someone (who had no idea what they were doing) adjusted the carb in an attempt to compensate for the bad shutter valve. After 45 mins of messing with the idle mixture and idle speed screw I got it to idle pretty smootly and rev freely. It still has one problem though, if you slowly increase the gas, right around 2.5k the rpms stop increasing, then as you apply more gas the tach drops, and then continues to increase. Its done this sinse I got the car. I believe that its the reason the car wants to stall when you start letting off the clutch. The only way to move the car is to slip the clutch like crazy. Any ideas? I'm really stumped on this one. sorry for the long post.

Have you looked at the accelerator pump? could be shooting too much fuel. Or maybe a vac leak?

peace

Sounds like the accelerator pump. That's also close to where the secondaries start to open. Does the Haynes manual have instructions for adjusting it?

Hmmm, I don't have my haynes in front of me, I'll have to check later. Is there a vaccum advance on the distributor? Could that be messed up? I checked the timing a week ago, it looked ok. I borrowed a timing light tonight and will recheck tomorrow to make sure its still right. So, are there any other ideas, or is it probably the accel pump? TIA

Have you replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the inlet screen at the carb? Could be fuel a starvation problem.

Update: Just got in from working on it. Timing is still right on. Swapped coils off the parts car to no avail. Messed with the carb some more, still nothing. Is the accel pump adjustable? If so, how do I do that? It seems to be getting fuel just fine. Guess I should check anyway.

If you haven't changed the fuel filter since you got it from the junkyard, it needs it. I've had similar symptoms on cars with clogged filters, lines or jets. No power and the only way to move it is to slip the clutch.

How long had the car been setting before you got it?

I don't think it was at the junk yard for more than a month or two, not sure how long it sat before then. But it has a current inspection sticker, so not too long. The thing that has me baffled with this is, its just hard to get moving, it has power once your going. If i'm on my dirt driveway and moving slowly in first and mash the gas it will start spinning instatnly. I also did a burnout on pavement and it had plenty of power so I don't think thats the problem. although, at this point anything is possible. thanks
