Question 82 Rx7 Won't stay started

Hi there I have a Rx7 82 that i'm trying to get up and going again and of course i"m running into some issues. If i pour gas into the carb and start it and keep my foot on the gas it will stay started but the minute I take my foot off the gas it will shut off and will not start again. I'm thinking there is no gas flow yet why would it stay started if i have my foot on the gas. I tried some of that fuel and carb cleaner but that did nothing. cars been sitting parked for about a year was on empty so i'm not sure if the problem is bad gas. I did fill it up after I poured in the fuel and carb cleaner. Today i'm gonna try to switch out the fuel filter but I'm not sure where it is located. Any help or Ideas would be appreciated.

thanks

Bella

fuel filter should be under the drivers door. just an inline one, at least on a 80.after you change that, take off the fuel line at the carb and see if its getting gas, its the fat one. if so, check the spark. sometimes spark is more important than fuel, well there the same importance all the time.good luck

one of those haynes manuals might be one of the best things to get. Sounds like the fuel pump is not working though. Do you hear a noise from under the car when you turn the key on? If not then the fuel pump might be bad or the fuse is blown.

No, if it was a fuel pump problem then holding the gas down wouldn't have any effect.

Could be bad gas and/or fuel filter, so I'd drain your tank, replace with good gas and change your filter.

Could also be spark, so pull your spark plugs, check their condition and replace if necessary. Same goes for plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Then check again for spark on all plugs and put them back.

Check for fuel getting to the carb and use a bit more of that carb cleaner stuff.

And GET A HEYNES MANUAL I guarantee you it's the best $20 you'll ever spend on your car.

If you're still having trouble after all that, feel free to post and we'll do what we can to help you out
