82 auto swap to 5 speed - trans stuck in reverse

Ok got Robbie's engine and trans swapped but damn trans stuck in reverse. It acts like I can shift to 1st and 2nd but anything to the right won't shift. This is the ONLY 5 speed I could find within 3 hour drive!!! I got it from the local junkyard. It's been pulled in climate control without oil for over 15 years!! What you guys think? Get it hot with some new oil in it and maybe it'll free up? Advice? I really don't want to pull this damn thing out!

Change it with half ATF and half gear oil....

Its worth a shot. Other than that you're gonna have to pull the transmission.

Took the trans apart. Three shift rods, the middle rod will NOT move. I think thats the selector between the 2 shafts? Anyway, took it back and got my money back.

the detent on the gear shift fork rod(idler gear) was notched too small and the spring is too weak(its a common problem) to keep the check ball in it. next time if it ever happends you can just remove the reverse switch and pry it backwards with a screwdriver and replace the spring with one with more tension.

Interesting, I pulled that bolt, spring and all that stuff apart. Still wouldn't move, even with a tap from a hammer LOL

if you mean tapping the bottom rod than yes it is hard with no leverage thru the switch hole but the middle rod is for 3rd and 4th. the 3-4 shift rod(middle) for some reason will not move if the 5-r rod is still stuck in reverse gear. but if you got the 5-r rod back in its nuetral position and the middle rod still wont budge than yeah its a good thing you took it back! thats cool that they gave you your money back, over here there is no such thing from junk yards

if you look at it from the top looking down. The rod on the left and far right would move up and down no problem. The middle one was STUCK! I got an 83 engine and trans with 76k on it in a package deal for $200. The transmission is now in the car, works perfect! Didn't need the motor but hey you never know... Never saw a PS pump for an 83. So it might have some sellable stuff on it LOL

Thanks Dakota I got it sorted out now. I got an 83, I want to change to stick but not soon. I haven't got enough nerve to start taking apart a 7 with 44,000 miles on the clock yet.

Its different, I got a 79 trans here with 80k on it... Nice good shifting, couldn't use it. The shifter is too far forward in a SA
