81 rx7 starting problems and questions

First I have to say hello,I just acquired an old 81 rx7 that's been sitting for about 5 yrs. I've been reading all of the faq's for geting an old rx7 up and running and it has been helpful up to this point. I've made sure it wasn't carbon locked and by some miracle it wasn't. I was even able to move the crank with the plugs in. The plugs/wires/fuel filter and oil were changed. The gas tank was emptied prior to me getting it so that's another check. It has a new fuel pump and I was told by whom I got it from that when they put a voltmeter up to it to test it, that it said low voltage or something of that sort. I can hear the pump running when I turn the key so I don't know. Spraying starting fluid down the carb gets the car started but when I mash the gas it does nothing and just dies. It's acting like it isn't getting enough fuel. My suspicion is that there is something in the fuel line clogging it because I really don't smell fuel when I continually press the gas pedal. Does anyone else have any ideas?

edit: Just to be clear I put 2 gallons of gas in the tank too.

update: The fuel pump has got to be the problem. I unplugged the gas line going to the front of the car at the pump, then turned it on and it doesn't pull any fuel from the tank. I can suck the fuel easily from the line to the tank. It looks like a new pump on there so I don't know what the problem is. I even hard wired it to the battery just in case but still to no avail.I guess the question now is; Is any pump going to be strong enough to get fuel from the tank??

Also make sure you have a proper ground, if where it grounds it is rusty, the pump will not
operate. rx7doctor
