81 RX-7 Running Problems

I have a 81 RX-7 that needed a new gas tank, I put an 84 tank in, which solved its running at all problem but as soon as the automatic choke kicks off it dies. It was sitting for about 6 years before coming back to life. I'm suspecting it needs some carb work of some sort but I don't know. It has new plugs and wires so let me answer that before someone asks. I can keep the gas on it at 1500 rpms ok, but as soon as I let off on the pedal, it seems to stall and die.

Also do these cars warm up fast and get hot? It just seems that this sucker got hot really fast but the temp gauge never went above what seemed to be its normal operating temp.

possible vaccum leak. i would first turn the idle screw up to where it will hold idle on it's own. so, set it to around 1500 or so rpm's. then start messing with the air/ fuel mix screw and try slowly lowering the idle. if this does nothing start really checking for vaccum leaks. also look down your carb while it's running and see if gas is leaking out the secondaries. if so, that is probably your problem. if that car has been sitting that long, it probably does need a nice little rebuild on the carb. hope i helped.

How much work is it to rebuild the carb? Something that can be done over a few hours or a couple of days? Also if gas is leaking out the secondaries, what's the procedure to fix that? Sorry for what seems to be n00b questions, I just want to try and enjoy my 7 before the weather gets cold and I can't drive it.
