80 RX-7 New exhaust system

What experiences have others have with removing the thermal reactor stock exhaust system and replacing with a Power Pulse system from Racing Beat? I have a strong exhaust smell inside the car and I cannot identify a leak. Not knowing the source I thought to simple replace the whole darn exhaust. The local muffler shops wont try to fix it. Would it be best to go all stock?? Is there a smell inside cars with good exhaust systems or should there not be any smell? Rob

Welcome to the forum.

I'm running an RB exhaust system on my 79. It works well.

You will, however be removing the emissions from the car, so you will not be able to pass emissions testing with that set-up.

Don't know what year cars are exempt from emission testing in MD.

Here is a link to Maryland exemption information.

You might want to search for more information.

If you cannot find an exhaust leak, but have a strong exhaust odor inside the car, you may have either a bad hatch seal, or a rust hole under the tail light. The 79-80 tail lights are known to leak, especially when blasted with high pressure water.
If this is the source of your exhaust fumes inside the car, a new $600 RB system will not cure anything.
Lift the carpet, and inspect the area for any rust. Fix any holes, then install the new exhaust, for enjoyment reasons.

hehe, i knew i had an exhuast leak. when i started it, the smoke would come out from the muffler AND underneath the car. There was a big hole in the pipe coming from the thermal reactor. I replaced it with the entire rb system and it's great!!

For getting the thermal reactor off, you need a 14mm swivel socket, with the u-joint built right in. Overall, the system came off pretty good.

GET THE RB SYSTEM- you'll love it.

exhaust

Racing Beat System is good and pretty easy to install. I have had mine for about 4 years now and love it. But as previously stated, the smell is probably coming through a bad hatch seal or taillight seal etc. No, there should not be any smell. Ill bet you get a headache.
