79 Sa brake change

My friend has brand new calipers, from some 1st gen guy I guess, everything looks the same but new.

Stuff was already apart tho ya see... how do I get the calipers back together it doesnt make any sense and I can only find a 80FSM.

Oh, you wanted to mount the calipers on a 79? You are going to need to replace the entire rear end in order to mount them. I tried using a 79 rear with a gsl/gsl-se axles but the calipers mount onto the actual rear end, not the axles. So you are at step 1, now step 2 is find a gsl or gsl-se rear end to mount them on.

79-80 calipers for FRONT are unique to those years- so the new ones you have will need to be "79-80" specific, not just "RX7 calipers". 81+ won't attach, wrong brake pipe thread pitch...

I put 81 calipers on the front of mine. I had a parts car that had all the hard line so i just cut the old fitting off my sa (coarse thread) and then cut about 1.5inches from the fitting on the 81 (fine thread) and used a union to put them together. They have been like that for a few years now, never leaked or had any problem. If i only knew i was going to be doing a full swap with rear end brake booster and proportionate valve i would have took the entire hard line but it works

You have the early "wedge" style calipers. The old school rotaries all use that type. Insert the top of the caliper then pivot it down until the bottom is in place. The silver plates go between the caliper and it's bracket. One plate goes on top and one on the bottom. Once the plates are in place there are two wire safety clips which snap into holes in ends of each plate. You can download the RX-2 manual from Kevin's site or I can take some pictures.

Never done brakes before... both fronts are apart.

We got brand new wedge style calipers, look pretty hopefully I do it right.

Apparently the only problem was the old calipers were fucked and leaked fluid/air into the system and it'd make the pedel soft as hell, so they got my bros car gots new calipers

I cant for the life of myself figure out how the metal brackets go in, one was already in but if i put them in I cant get the caliper on lol

I just checked out that fsm, thar be the early style brakes but the pics arent good enough for me to figure it out, id appreciate the pics you offered

The aftermarket Haynes and Chilton manuals for the first gens cover both types, with pictures.

No idea if they're still for sale, though - - had mine a long time.

Not my car and I got no money to donate more stuff to my friend lol.

I'm only working on this SA to learn and because of my love for rotary's, poor sa has been not running for over a year now :'(

Here's what it looks like when its together. Bottom is the same as the top.



Wedges and safety clips.



Install the brake pads in the bracket.



Slide the caliper over the pads and engage the top lip of the caliper on the spring as shown.



Pivot the caliper down and past the lower spring. You might need to pull the spring down or tap the caliper up into place.

Pivot the caliper all the way down until the lower lip fits into the bracket and spring just like the top.



This is how it looks before installing the wedges.



Put a little grease on the wedges and position them with the smaller tab facing out. Slide them into place one at a time. Its easier to do the lower one first. Pressing the caliper in against the springs will give more space for the wedges to slide into.



They should fit between the caliper and bracket like this.



When you have them both in place insert the 4 safety clips. Each wedge has one in the back and one in the front.

Nice photos/how-to indeed Ron.

When you do brakes, only do one side at a time. That way you can use the other side as a reference in case you forget something.
