Question 79 Auto to Manual swap *Getting a 84 Donor*

Hey all,

Just have a few questions regarding an auto to manual conversion i will be doing next week. I also tried looking everywhere but could not find the specific answers for my questions. Please help me out with this one guys.

1. Is the Clutch Pedal Assembly the same between the 79 and 84 rx7s?
2. Will the clutch switch be important in this swap? What I've read in one of the threads is that 79 are just for the safety switch of starting the car, but i also heard that it cuts fuel to the engine when depressed.
3. Will I have problems using the clutch master, slave cylinders and my current brake booster. What i read in one of the threads i searched is that there are differences within the plunger length, but if i can use the 84 clutch pedal, i believe i wont have a problem.
4. Since the 84 donor car is a 12A motor, find clutches will be a breeze right? I don't have to mix and match clutches and flywheels or even add a counterweight?

Thats all the questions I have so far. Really appreciate the help you guys.

thanks,

The 1984 Donor car is really a bad choice to use with your 79. The shifter is in a different location on your car than it is on the 1984. You'll have to cut a hole in the floor to make it work. Also, I believe that the pedal assemblies are different. You'd be much better off finding a 79 or 80 to use as a donor. The transmission of the 1984 certainly won't be a bolt in.

yea hes totally right, when i swapped my 82 5 speed trans into my 79 the shifter ended up going way back and had to extend the hole i had a good 3-4 inches then go on to make a custom rubber shift thing that covered the hole, i do have a 79 4 speed trans with shifter ill sell you cause that fits right up to the hole just pm me if you would like it

Thanks for the reply guys. I dont mind cutting the tunnel though so no worries there. My worries is the pedal from the 84 and if it should bolt up. Thank glaze for your comment on the pedal assembly. Can anyone verify this. I am also looking for some proof on this right now. It is hard to find parts for 79 nowadays and if I can get this 84 donor for cheap, I would really want to go with it. Thanks again guys.

I've done the auto to manual swap on a 1980 using all 1980 parts and the whole pedal box just swaps out.

I've also done the swap on a 1985 us all 1985 parts. On a 1984-1985, you only need to remove the long bolt and not the entire pedal box.

Not sure if the 84/85 pedals will be a direct fit in an 80 but if I remember right it will not.
