Question 79 to 85, will clutch fit?

I am thinking about buying an 85 12A to replace my 79 12A. I have a nearly new pressure plate and clutch in the 79. Does anyone know if it will fit onto the 85?

If I'm remembering correctly - it's a straight swap.

no it wont the 79 I think it's a 215mm and the 85 is a 225mm.

I just did a 1980 engine swap into my 85 gsl and the 85 is bigger than the 80. I wish it was cause the 85 disk was in better shape then the 80.

ive this swap also and i also had a new clutch and pressure plate for my 79 engine.

the flywheel on the newer engines were lighter and they were resesed in more..

the 79 clutch will still work, even thought it is a little smaller, ive got a 79 clutch in mine..

but the pressure plate wont work at all..

djmickyg - Did you have any other "problems" in doing this swap? I'm just trying to understand what I am getting into before I try to do this?
Thanks

with the clutch the only problem was the pressure plate.. it still worked fine with the transmission i had..

i asume ur still gona be using the front mount oil cooler an ditch the oil heater from the 85, all u have to to with this is to chop a little copper "T" peice off the side off the engine witch redirectred water to the cooler..

wires for the emissions are slightly different but i took most of it off so it wasnt a problem.. if u cant figure it out u can use the anti polution crap from the 79 engine..

and if u car is the jspec moddel i would look at getting a new carb also.. they came with the smallest carbs.

and i think that was all..

Yes, it appears I wasn't remembering quite right

81-85 = straight swap.

My apologies.

Ok, I just swapped a 1980 engine into my 85 so this should all be the same for you.

This will help if you are planning a complete swap of the engine. if your just swapping the clutch this wont help you much.

This one will help you allot click here

Here's the swap in a nutshell... having put a '83 engine (practically same as '85) in a '80 (same as '79) chassis...

Clutch... You use the '85 engine's clutch, as mentioned. Clutch disc diameter is different. It will bolt right up to your '80 transmission.

Wiring... You will *NOT* (repeat, *NOT*) be emissions legal without swapping over the ECU and wiring harness from the donor car. The '79 emissions equipment cannot be made to work on the '85 engine, the air injection ports are fundamentally different. You will however need to use the '85 engine's intake manifold, though. If you're not going to bother swapping over the whole '85 wiring and ECU and whatnot, remove the ACV from the intake manifold and replace it with a blockoff plate, and wire the shutter valve open (important: do not physically remove shutter valve shaft, no matter how tempting - airflow will be *worse* than with the shaft/butterfly in place. Just wire it open) and you should be OK. PM me or e-mail or IM or something if you need any more details.

its not 81-85 strait swap, i just put an 82 which was the last year of the 215mm clutch in my 85, and i had to get a new clutch, and change wireing harnesses. other than that oh yeah and i changed to the front mount oil cooler, other than that its pretty much a strait swap.
